When people think of Pennsylvania, they often think of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or Harrisburg. Not many people think of the smaller towns that are somewhere in the middle. Central Pennsylvania is home to Penn State University, hundreds of farms and not a whole lot to do. Here are a few things you know to be true if you are from Central Pennsylvania.
1. When someone shouts, "We are!" you know exactly what they are referring to.
Penn State is life.
2. Passing a buggy is a regular occurrence.
The Amish are everywhere.
3. No one will have ever heard of the town you're from, so you have to explain you are X many hours from Pittsburgh and X many hours from Philadelphia.
"Oh, you've never heard of Huntingdon? It's about two-and-a-half hours from Pittsburgh and three-and-a-half hours from Philly."
4. It's always a big deal when there's a popular music artist performing at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Yes! A concert I don't have to drive hours and rent a hotel room to go to.
5. You know Wawa has nothing on Sheetz.
You probably have at least two, if not three, Sheetz stores near you.
6. Everyone says "crick" instead of "creek" and "yinz" instead of "you all."
We have our own language.
7. Whoopie pies are called "whoopie pies," not "gobs."
And, nothing is better than whoopie pies made by the Amish.
8. Middleswarth and Hartley's chips are the best kind of chips.
Every time you travel outside of Central P.A., you are always thoroughly disappointed that your favorite chips aren't on the shelves.
9. You rarely call your state "Pennsylvania," instead you say, "P.A."
But you don't name any other states by their abbreviations.
10. Any vacation spot is at least four hours away.
Want to go to the beach? Better be prepared for a lengthy road trip!
11. Your whole town is divided between Eagles and Steelers fans.
Thank goodness they aren't in the same conference!
12. A good majority of people you graduated with either went to Penn State Altoona or Penn State University Park.
Myself included.
13. If you haven't hit a deer, then you have came pretty darn close to hitting one.
They are everywhere.
14. You get at least one day off for deer season the Monday after Thanksgiving.
It is pretty common to have off on Tuesday too. Plus your whole Instagram and Facebook pages are filled with hunting pictures.
15. Almost all of your friends are in love with country music.
It's always strange to find someone who isn't or be the one who isn't.
16. The coolest place to spend a hot summer's day is Raystown Lake.
It's a reasonable distance away and it is the largest man-made lake in P.A. Woo-hoo!
17. You think you hate where you're from, but you actually love it.
There's no where else you would have wanted to be raised, and you always get excited to go home after being away.
