As much as we love and cherish our college lives, a wave of weirdness hits everyone at the same time. We get irritable, overwhelmed, sad for no reason... And then we realize: it's time to go home. Here are some tell-tale signs that you're itching for your Thanksgiving departure.
1) Everyone is getting on your nerves, even your best friends
2) You start to realize how disgusting the bathrooms are and yearn for a shower that doesn't require shoes
3) As you eat your mediocre takeout with a plastic fork you can smell your grandmas homemade brisket
4) You get super emotional when you talk to your mom on the phone
5) You start making elaborate plans with all your high school friends
6) The frat/bar scene just isn’t doing it for you anymore
7) You're sick of listening to music through headphones and you're counting down the days until the hardcore jam sesh you'll have alone in your car
8) You spend too much time contemplating how you early you're going to get up for Black Friday shopping and which mall you'll go to
9) You make your brother give you a play by play of all the high school drama, even when you realize you don't know anyone he's talking about
10) You fall asleep every night dreaming of your sweet, sweet bed at home
The unsettling feeling that accompanies homesickness is often difficult to explain. It’s not like you aren’t happy at school; the only way to adequately explain it is that you need a break. The great thing about this break, however, is that I know the feeling of ambivalence will dissipate after experiencing all the wonderful elements of home I've been longing for.
I know that after five nights of sleeping in my own bed, family dinners and animated movies with my sister, I'll be ready and excited to go back, to tackle all of my crazy college friends, to go out on the town, to shower in the mildly unsanitary shower.
Because as much as we need to return home every once and a while and get our bearings, there's a reason we go away to college: Because it’s awesome.
