Colorism: You Can Be Lightskin And Still Text Back

Colorism is defined as the idea that people with lighter skin are superior to those with darker skin tones. It is an issue that is in our society due to the way the media puts down darker skinned women. The years 2012 to 2014, was filled with memes on social media about being light skinned and dark skinned black people.

People thought it was hilarious. That it was just a joke. Black boys and girls would caption their Facebook and Instagram pictures with the hashtags #TeamLightSkin, #TeamDarkskin and #TeamBrownSkin. The problem is that many people aren’t aware of the origin of this phenomenon called colorism.

Colorism originated during slavery when darker slaves would work in the plantation while the lighter skinned slaves would get to work inside the home. A test called the “Paper bag test” would be performed to determine who would work in the fields and who would work inside. Slaves lighter than a paper bag would get to work inside while the ones darker worked the plantations. This divide was encouraged by the slave owners and it shaped a type of mentality that still exists among black people today. It’s the reason why many consider darker skin to be inferior to light skin and it’s the reason why there are so many stereotypes about different skin tones. I have personally heard people say that dark skin girls are not pretty or that light skin people don’t respond to text.

However, I feel like things are getting better. In 2015, light skin

jokes are not as popular as they were before. I’m starting to see the #LightSkinsWinning replaced with hashtags such as #MelaninPoppin and #MelaninOnFleek. People are being more enlightened and are starting to realize that having melanin is a gift and not a curse. This might be due to the popularity of dark skinned actresses such as Lupita Nyongo and Viola Davis. It might also be due to the Black Lives Matter movement which has reunited and awakened black people all over this country. I don’t expect colorism to be one hundred percent gone overnight but I hope that one day black people will stop judging one another based on skin tone or hair texture.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
