You Are Going To Fail in College

You are going to fail in college

Get ready, this is real life and it’s not easy.

The next four years aren’t going to be a walk in the park and teachers are not going to hand you grades.

I know I expected to go into my first year of college and make the 4.0 and feel confident about my learning abilities. Now I don’t think I’m not capable of greatness, but I found out that sometimes the best I can do isn’t “A” worthy and that that’s okay.

You aren’t always going to make As in your classes because the best you can do just isn’t enough for that class. And that is okay. This isn't high school and some of your professors don't care about your scholarships and your GPA. You have to put the work in. Even sometimes you'll put the work in and you'll still fail. The best thing you can do is pick yourself back up when you fall. Even if you're the only one there to catch yourself.

College is about learning who you are and about your learning strategies. College is a huge learning experience. That being said, don't give up when things seem impossible. Don't give up when your old friends change. Because everybody changes these next four years and you're in for some surprises.

Some of my best friends left me high and dry. My boyfriend of 3 years left me and found another girl within weeks. People aren't who you think they are. Those people who you hugged so tight at graduation and the people who promised to love you forever, some of them just aren't meant to be in your life forever. And as much as it hurts, it's okay.

You could say I failed at those relationships I lost, and sure, maybe I did. Maybe I failed at that. But it takes two. And people change. And it's just not feasible to keep up with everybody, and nobody expects you too.

Everybody loses people after high school. And you're going to meet some amazing people who are going to make it okay. These people most likely will be more there for you than your high school friends if you let them.

Never thought I'd be in that position last August when I was driving to school with the U-Haul behind the truck ready to move in. But, college isn't like the movies. It's amazing, messy, reckless, a learning experience and overall it's some of the most impactful 4 years of your life. You will fail, but that's okay. Just make sure you're there to pick yourself back up.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
