"So you support a f***ing cheater?" "Why in the world do you still wear that?" "Take that garbage off.".... just a few comments us LiveSTRONG bracelet wearers encounter on the occasion.
Yes we understand that the man who founded the organization was in fact a cheater, but he has resigned and is no longer involved with the organization. So for those of you who make these comments to myself, and others, when we reply with our reasons as to why we still wear the "gaudy yellow bracelet," not only do you usually feel stupid, but maybe you will think twice about the comments you make. Here are 10 reasons why I still wear my LiveSTRONG bracelet....
1. I put this bracelet on when my grandma was diagnosed with cancer.
2. She may have lost her battle, but to me, this bracelet is a continual reminder to not only remember her but to continue living strongly.
3. I love the idea that Armstrong had behind starting the organization.
4. I do not think about Armstrong when I wear it, but the cancer patients/survivors/victims that encompass the LiveSTRONG motto into their battles.
5. The bracelet gives a connection to those who still wear them to share their stories.
6. To me, the organization has become more than Armstrong. It has established itself as a valuable resource for those affected by this disease and that is much more important than Armstrong and his allegations.
7. It is a sign of hope, perseverance and strength.
8. It represents my grandmother's struggles and shows cancer survivors that others are thinking about cancer.
9. I have been wearing it for over seven years and feel naked without it.
10. Once there is a cure for cancer, that is when I will feel comfortable taking it off.
So for those that choose to mock me, go ahead. But maybe now you will think twice when you see someone with a LiveSTRONG bracelet on, because to us it is more than a piece of yellow rubber on our wrists.
