Since I was little girl, I have loved the color yellow. There are a few reasons why this may be. My grandmother who passed away 11 years ago was my best friend. She was a bright light in my world and always brought a smile to my face. For as long as I can remember, she always said that yellow was her favorite color. There always seemed to be a touch of yellow around her wherever she went. She wore bright yellow aprons in the kitchen when she cooked. Many things that decorated her house were yellow as well. When we went on our frequent trips to the beach, she always wore a yellow straw visor to protect her from the sun.
So I grew up to love the color because of my grandmother. One of my first memories is taking my preschool class photo in a yellow and black dress. When I was thirteen, I painted my room a bright shade of yellow. I wasn't the typical teenage girl with a pink or purple room. My friends would often joke around and say they had to wear sunglasses whenever they came over to hang out in my room.
When I started really enjoying music as a young teen, I discovered Coldplay. The rock band makes some of the most beautiful and emotionally-charged music I have ever heard. Their song "Yellow" is my personal favorite. The lyrics compare the power of the yellow stars in the sky to a deep love in the singer's life. The lyrics that best describe this are: "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you. And everything you do. Yeah, they were all yellow." Listen to this song and you will certainly feel something deep in your soul.
Some of my other favorite things are yellow, too. In the autumn months, I fall in love with the beautiful trees that only appear colorful for a few weeks before the winter dulls them. The vivid yellow leaves that mix with the other shades of orange and red are so breathtaking to me. There is nothing better than a long drive in the fall on colorful, tree-lined roads.
My favorite drink is a cool glass of yellow lemonade. I have always tried to live by the life motto: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." The color yellow is symbolic of a lot of the positive things in life. It represents good energy and warmth. There is a brightness and light usually associated with the color. This is especially true when you see the smiling sun up in the sky each day.
What's interesting to me is that in the last ten years, a survey was done that showed only six percent of people in the United States call yellow their favorite color. Knowing this fact made me feel special and unique. If you love the color, congratulations on being one of the few. If not, I hope this article shed some light on why the color yellow can be so loved.
