With Easter having past, I thought it would necessary to bring tribute to someone who claims to be a god (if you don’t believe me, see Yeezus album, track “I Am a God” ft. God). Coming from a girl who jammed to Jesus Walks in middle school and competitively danced to a Kanye West compilation track in high school, you could say I’m a fan. With that disclaimer, I’m fully aware Yeezy is not loved by all.
To say Kanye West is controversial would be an understatement. From complaints about him thinking he’s the most important human on earth to judgmental comments on his not too kind altercations with paparazzi, hate for Kanye echoes across the nation. After all, you can’t really win over a nation by hopping on stage and interrupting America’s sweetheart’s VMA acceptance speech.
We all know Kanye is one cocky son of a gun. However, with this sense of self-assurance, he sends a message to his listeners to be confident. “Stronger” wouldn’t be the pump up song of athletes everywhere if it weren’t for the “you can do it” motivation it provides.
Kanye also takes the time to give himself pep talks through Twitter. A personal favorite is, “Kim doesn’t know what a blessing I am to her.” An added solid gold piece of motivation for Kanye would be, "You may be talented, but you’re not Kanye West."
Another thing Kanye takes a huge amount of pride in is his fashion sense. You’d be kidding yourself if you do not acknowledge Kanye West as somewhat of a fashion icon. It takes a certain type of person to transform the Kardashians into something more than annoying reality stars.
To quote Kanye’s twitter once again, “She asked when is Fashion Week…uuuum….I thought it was every week??!!”
The fact that he was on the cover of Vogue can attest to his pull in the fashion industry, because you better believe Anna Wintour would not have placed Kim on the cover solo. With real expensive self-coined Air Yeezys and his own clothing line to boot, if Kanye’s music career falls flat, he can always fall back on fashion.
Kanye’s latest complaint is that his new music sucks. Mind you, “Yeezus” is no “College Dropout” or “808’s and Heartbreak," but the fact that he takes risks in adopting a new sub-genre of hip hop is something to be admired. The electric sound mixed with tribal rhythms as shown in “Black Skinhead” depict how contrasting sounds can work together.
Experimenting with sounds is admirable, but there are some songs that are just too out there for me. “Bound 2” as a song is really questionable, and the music video is just a hard pass, but the “Bound 3” parody video with James Franco and Seth Rogen is sure to make you laugh…or at least cringe at the awkwardness.
Now, I’m not asking you all to love Kanye West as much as I do, or even take the time out to listen to the mentioned tracks, but what I hope the article brought to you was a reason behind what makes Kanye great, and the hopes that the next time you hear his name, an eye roll doesn’t follow.
