Before "X-Men: Days of Future Past" became the best-reviewed film in the X-Men film series, Bryan Singer signed on and returned to direct a sequel that would focus on the origins of the mutants. With "Days of Future Past" teaming the original cast with their younger selves, many wondered if the sequel would be as big as Singer promised. I can tell you that from the looks of the trailer and early reviews, "X-Men: Apocalypse" will be the best film in the series.
"X-Men: Apocalypse," the ninth film of the series, stars returning X-Men actors James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till, Evan Peters and Rose Byrne alongside newcomers Tye Sheridan, "Game of Thrones" Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Ben Hardy, Lana Condor, Olivia Munn and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The titular villain, Apocalypse, is played by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" very own Oscar Isaac. Taking place in 1983, ancient mutant Apocalypse has awaken after thousands of years and plans to take over the world. His plans doesn't sit right with Charles Xavier (McAvoy) who joins forces with his adopted sister Raven Darkholme/Mystique (Lawrence) to lead the young mutants to stop Apocalypse and his team, known as the Four Horsemen.
Having cast Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp as younger versions of franchise-led mutants Jean Grey/Phoenix, Scott Summers/Cyclops and Ororo Munroe/Storm, is really amazing and a great step for the franchise. All are very talented young actors that have proudly accepted the torch that has been passed on to them to play the newer versions of these beloved characters and do some thing's that the original actors haven't had the chance to do with the characters—explore their backstory. Taking it back to 1983 gives these actors the opportunity to show how each of these characters came to be who they are in the original trilogy. Bryan Singer recently sat down with Cassam Looch from HeyUGuys for an exclusive interview as he talked about what to expect from the new film and Hugh Jackman like we've never seen him before.
As a big fan of the franchise, I can say that Bryan Singer has done a tremendous job with these films. He's not just wrapping up the trilogy that started with "First Class," but also wrapping up all six X-Men films. That's something I admire from a director. He's been with the series for sixteen years, actually directing the first two films of the series, and has taken the franchise down paths I never thought they'd take, such as reuniting the old cast members with the new members in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and turning it into one of the most talked about films of 2014. That is why "Apocalypse" will be the best X-Men film. He's pitting the team against a villain with abilities far beyond their own. This is something the series has never done before. It would be great to see what they will go through to make it out alive. Singer has a vision for the franchise and it works really well. With confirmation that a sequel will take place in the 1990s and Singer wanting to take the team into space, you can expect that to be quite the adventure. Until then, catch the beginning of one of the most popular superhero teams in history when "X-Men: Apocalypse" arrives in theaters on Friday, May 27, 2016.
