I really don’t know why the WWE does the things that it does. I’m a wrestling fan but I took a break from watching it around mid-2015. Recently, however, I decided to watch it again with the Royal Rumble coming up at the end of January.
In a direct to video feature titled WWE & The Jetsons: Robo-Wrestlemania, the WWE plans to crossover with the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon The Jetsons. The plot revolves around George Jetson finding Big Show after he’s been frozen (mid pose!) for a hundred years. After he finds out that humans no longer wrestle, he wins the World Heavyweight Championship and plans to use it to take over the world. In order to combat him, the Jetsons go back in time to enlist the help of WWE Superstars including Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Sheamus (John Cena is notably absent).
Looking at the trailer, it seems that Jetsons was chosen so that everyone can fight the robots and the movie can be violent while still maintaining a family friendly rating. This isn’t too foregin of a concept for children’s media, I remember that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made it a point to say that the Foot Clan were robots so the Turtles could use their famous weapons on them.
This is actually WWE’s fourth movie crossing over with a classic cartoon, having done two with Scooby-Doo and one with The Flintstones. Those cartoons, while nothing special, were fairly good in their own rights. They were able to poke fun at themselves and the wrestlers that starred in them (John Cena is great at parodying himself, which is why his absence is noticeable within the trailer).
You can decide for yourself when the special comes to video and streaming services late Feburary.
