WVU Hot, Top Secret Spots!

We all have our favorite spots on campus to study, relax or get a drink. I thought I would share some of my favorite spots, and maybe a few places that you never knew about.

So here it is. 10 of my favorite spots on campus to relax, hang out, and venture off to.

1. High Street: There is no secret about the infamous High Street, but there may be a few spots you never knew about. Blue Moose Café, which hopefully most of you have heard about, is a great place to relax, enjoy some entertainment and maybe have lunch or a few beers after class. Café Bacchus is a five star restaurant located in that giant white pillared house which most of you drunkenly walk by on the weekend. It’s a tasty place to take a girl on a date, or enjoy with your family!  Billiards and Cue is another place that most of you have walked by a lot but never had the chance to venture down. It’s located right off of the sidewalk and is underground, so it’s a great hiding place to escape the nightlife.

2. The Library’s Hidden Spots: I’m sure you have all been to the library at least once (hopefully). If you’re like me, a night owl, you go all the time and don’t leave until the last minute at 2:00 in the morning. I always have that one spot that I hide out in, and that would be the Milano and Robinson Reading rooms located in the old library part. I like to venture off to find cool and quiet places to study, and other than these two rooms, there is an Historical section on the 6th floor, which most people don’t know about. There is also a door under the steps that lead to the Milano room that says “Not An Exit”, but it doesn’t say “Do Not Enter”, so next time you’re in the library, give it a peak, it may be a world into Harry Potter you never know.

3. Greenhouse in LSB: I’m sure a lot of you have seen it on your walk to class or way home, but did you know there's a Greenhouse on the 7th floor of the Life Sciences Building? One night when I didn’t feel like doing homework, a friend and I took the elevator up to the 7th floor to explore. Who knew there were 7 floors? Anyway, we got up to the floor and there were “Caution” and, “Do Not Enter,” signs all over the place. This was at around 11 at night, so it was a little sketchy. It almost reminded me of a scary movie scene. Also, up there were some comfortable chairs that would be great to study!

4. Woodburn Meeting Room: That same night we explored up to the 7th floor of LSB, we took the elevator in Woodburn up to the 4th floor, and then walked up to the “5th floor” to see if the secret room was unlocked. Unfortunately it wasn't, but I’m sure it would be easy to pick if you really wanted to go up there. The room faces the Monongahela River and overlooks all of the Sunnyside area.

5. The “Underground Tunnel”: Underneath Oglebay Hall on the ground floor is what some people refer to as the “Underground Tunnel”. As some of you know, it’s just a long hallway that leads from the front of Oglebay to the basement of Ming Hsieh Hall, but it’s kind of hidden from campus because the main Oglebay steps are built over top of the entrance. It wasn’t until I attended an event in Ming Hsieh did I find out about this because I haven’t had a class in either of those buildings yet.

6. Woodburn Bell Tower: So the rumors since the 1800’s are that it's a tradition for Journalism Majors to sign the wall up in the bell tower of Woodburn before they graduate. I've had many friends tell me they signed it in their Junior/Senior years, but I haven’t been up there yet to see if its true. I'm only a sophomore in the SOJ, but I’ll keep y’all updated.

7. Swimming Pool in E. Moore Hall: Okay, so we all know there's a pool in Elizabeth Moore Hall, even you incoming freshmen were told about it on you tour. However, did you know you could rent it out to have a pool party in there? I don’t know about you guys, but that sounds like a pretty awesome fraternity event!

8.  Mountain Lair Pool Hall: Enjoy playing billiards? Like going bowling? The mountain lair pool hall is a great place to escape the lunch or dinner crowd (and it's a nice quiet place to study if passerby’s in the Lair distract you). It’s located in the basement of the Lair, and consists of pool tables, the bowling alley, a games area, a few offices, and a restaurant that serves alcohol for those 21 and older. This also is nothing secretive, but it’s relaxing and quiet to get work done.

9.  Old Basketball Arena: Stansbury Hall which houses ROTC, Philosophy, Religion, Humanities, and International Offices, was once the old basketball arena before the Coliseum was built around the 1970’s. The gym is used for Physical Education classes, and is open to reserve for events, as most of us Greeks know since a lot of philanthropies are held here. There is also a workout gym above the court, which only costs $45 a semester. It’s crazy how much has changed since then!

10.  Old Football Stadium: While we’re on the subject of “Old”, did you know the football stadium used to be right on the LSB lawn in between the Life Sciences Building and Business and Economics Building? That’s right! Our once “Mountaineer Field” in the heart of Morgantown is now the “Milan Puskar Stadium” across from the hospital.

So there you go! 10 Hot, Top Secret Spots that you can explore when you get back on campus in the fall.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
