Dear America,
Let me start this by saying how much I love you. You're the best country any citizen could ask for. Others can be super clingy and won't allow me the freedom to be who I am. I've always appreciated that about you. You've encouraged me to have my own opinion and speak for myself, so now I'm going to use that freedom to do some real talk.
Babe, you've always been there for me. You're like a big brother, helping out the little guy in need. But I'm going to be honest, it seems like you care more about the appearance of being helpful than actually being helpful. Come to think of it, it seems like you care more about making as big of a scene in the world news as possible than accomplishing anything productive or helpful. You seem to think that if it's not going to result in a juicy news story, it shouldn't concern you. What about my concerns, America? Don't I get a say in how this relationship goes?
And I know what you're going to say. "Our relationship is built on a democracy, so I always consider your voice on matters like this." Babe, let's be real here: you listen about as much the stone heads of Mount Rushmore (i.e. you don't). It seems like I have to hold a protest every time I want you to see my aide of the issue. How is that a healthy relationship?
You used to inspire people. Citizens in other relationships think about you, fantasizing that you would provide a better future than the one they have with their current country. Heck, people have died for you, many times, and will continue to die for you when you need it. You were humble and proud of what your people did for you. But, America, babe, you act like it's nothing to you now. I'll be honest: you're reputation is trash. Do you know what other countries think about you? They think you're spoiled, ignorant, loud, rude, and so many other terrible words. You act better than every other country just because you're this big, bad world power and you've built up this strong and magical image of "Everything is okay!" to hide all the crimes and tragedies within.
Above all, America, you used to inspire me. Whenever someone would ask about what we have, I'd smile and say, "What America and I have is special, and nothing is ever going to change that." Now, I'm not so sure.
What happened to that feeling you'd give me? That tingling, giddy feeling on our anniversary in July. The fireworks lighting up and reminding me of what it feels like to be your, and only your citizen. The beautiful sound of our song being sung at sports games. The feeling that I'm proud to be yours. The fireworks are still there, it doesn't feel the same. I miss that, and I want it back.
I will say this about you: you still have a knack for bringing people together. Honestly, I'm proud of your people, because they are standing up for themselves and their beliefs more than ever it seems. However, wouldn't it be better if everyone was united together instead of against each other, protest against protest and cause against cause? It's like you're back in high school, when everyone had to be a part of a clique or they were thought of as a social outcast. The immaturity is getting really old, really fast.
I say all this with the utmost love and respect. You know I usually leave your problems to the professionals (like representatives and political leaders), but I felt, as your loving citizen, it was time for me to be honest and tell you exactly how I felt. I've tried to get involved and understand who you are now, but I still want to keep moving forward.
I want this citizenship to continue, but if you don't find some way to change your ways fast, I might have to start seeing some other country. I hear those European ones have nice accents...
With all the love in my heart,
An American.
