Writing is such an important aspect of our lives, yet there’s such an aversion to it. Writing comes naturally to some but, with others, it is difficult to put pen to paper. The truth is that even the best writers have trouble, but we push through it because writing is more than the words written on a page.
I’ve been writing for years. It has always been a passion of mine, but I am not proclaiming that it’s never hard. Like many, I write a page and delete it. I write three sentences and I’m jabbing the delete button in pure frustration. If I’m being honest, the delete button is my close friend. I stare at my computer screen for minutes at a time. The keys taunt me because I can’t piece together a meaningful string of words. If the words don’t have meaning, then they aren’t meant to be written.
To me, that’s what writing is—a sincere expression of words. You see, writing is beautiful.
Writing—to me—is really special. It is a way to touch others people’s lives. People you don’t even know. There is power in communication. There is power in the words you read. They make you feel. They bring emotions to surface. They tell a story. They inspire.
We all know the phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That’s a load of crap. Words are not powerless. And with your writing, you are giving beauty, meaning and power to your string of expression. There is power in writing, believe me.
The talent of writing is not powerless, but is a form of an art, like drawing, opera and ballet. The objective of writing is to suck your audience in, to make them feel the sincerity in your heart.
The truth is, I don’t write because I want gratification for my work. It’s not about the success that comes from it. Instead, it is about sharing the words on your heart. It is about letting your readers know they are not alone. It is about giving a sense of hope, a sense of anticipation, a sense of humor, a sense of connection.
Words are not one dimensional, but have layers of depth behind them.
I write to lift the story off my heart, so that whoever reads it, will be affected in some way, shape or fashion. It is expressing words that will radically change someone’s day.
This is why writing is important. Because your beautiful expression is meant to be read by that person who is struggling or who needs reassurance or who needs a good laugh. Someone out there needs the power of your words. All that time jabbing at the delete button is worth it because you can help someone make it through— just by sharing the story in your heart.
Try it. You might be surprised at the meaningful string of words within you.
