Writing is something that almost anyone can do. Think about it. It is about as simple as picking up a pencil to write a letter or writing up a complicated math equation. However, what does it mean to truly be a writer? Anyone can write his or her name down on a piece of paper or write notes in class and call it writing, but there is so much more to actually being a writer. A writer uses written words to release an inner passion within him or her.
Writing is the result of an unimaginable amount of thoughts swirling around in a human’s mind. It is the inner most ideas, opinions and even demons hiding beneath layers of skin just waiting to seep out. Writing serves as therapy for many people as it allows them to write down whatever they are feeling. That being said, almost anyone has the ability to be a writer as long as he or she is willing to pour his or her soul out onto a piece of paper.
In recent years, writing has become a very important part of my personal life. With the stress of life being at an ultimate high, my absolute best friend has been my journal. There are many times when I have a horrible day both mentally and emotionally and all I can think to do is sleep. Nevertheless, I try to avoid falling into my bed for hours and instead allow my mind to collapse into the pages of my journal. I allow myself to let go and become vulnerable in order to fill each line with the letters of the alphabet that form the complicated mess within my psyche. I use writing as a form of expression, just as artists use painting or drawing to express themselves. Writing is an art that is free to anyone willing to take advantage of it.
A writer is any ordinary person looking for a healthy outlet. Life is full of uncontrollable ups and downs that can really affect a person emotionally. However, the one concrete thing amid all of the madness, to me, is writing. It is the one aspect of life that only the individual doing the writing can control.
So, being a writer ends up meaning a lot of things. It means having the ability to escape reality, even just for a little while. It means having a mind full of strange and beautiful thoughts. It means having the guts to be exposed and vulnerable. Most importantly, being a writer means being human. So, go for it. Pick up that paper and pen and start writing. Write what is real. Write was is not real. Write what you wish to be real. Pour your heart and soul onto the pages. It takes a special being to act upon the beauty of writing, but I truly believe that this being exists somewhere within each and every individual on this earth. In a world that is full of uncertainty, it is comforting to know that writing is and will always be there.
