6 Ways That My Father Helped Me Become Who I Am

I would have not been this successful without my father being there for me

6 Ways That My Father Helped Me Become Who I Am
Max Dell-Thibodeau

To celebrate Father's Day, I wrote 6 things my father did to help me in the long term.

Work Ethic

When I was in grade school and struggling in my academics and other areas as well, I thought that I should do something else. My father told me that the more I practice something, the better I will be at it. When I was picking up something heavy, I told him that I was tired. He told me that I will get stronger if I lift heavier things. Another thing he taught me was to use good posture when sitting, standing, or moving around. My posture has been getting better every day, since I have been putting an effort to using good posture. He also taught me independence for a long period of time, which has turned me into an independent and responsible adult.

Math Skills

When the math I was doing was monotonous and not getting me anywhere, my father wrote practice problems for me. I had more fun doing them since he always found ways to make them creative. He kept doing this, even as I got to advanced algebra. He also helped me with my math, once I got to a more advanced level.

Played sports with me

When I was getting into sports, my father used some of his time to play sports with me. We would sometimes kick the soccer ball around, play catch, shoot hoops, and time me when I was running quickly from point A to B. When I got older, he showed me how to do exercises with good form.

Helped me make more friends

When I had only a few friends, my father encouraged me to play with other kids. I ended up making a lot of friends and he didn't always have to bug the same person to spend time with me. Socializing gave me a lot of things to do whenever I felt bored.

Had hope in my future goals

Some of my future goals I had from a young age were to either become an architect, construction worker, pro athlete, mathematician, or engineer. I can see a possibility in most of my goals, but I am now studying computers at Adelphi University. When I was in high school, my goals were to get into a good college. Therefore, I'm at Adelphi University. About a couple of years ago, I was looking for jobs and he gave me tips on how to get a job, such as building a resume and answering interview questions.

Helped me with my college tuition

Since many colleges in the US are expensive, I would not have went to a good one without his support. I go to a private college, which is Adelphi University, but it can be affordable if you get scholarships. From getting good grades and performing well on standardized tests in high school, I received a good academic scholarship, making Adelphi way more affordable than the average private college. This goes back to the work ethic I learned from my father, since the work I put in made me a happy college student.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
