The internet has taken over our lives. It will not be much longer until Skynet becomes fully self-aware and we need Ahnold to save the day for us. Before that time comes, however, the internet is a wonderful, technological marvel that everyone should take advantage of!
One of the biggest successes on the internet over the past several years has been the rise of YouTube. It first began as a very small company back in 2005. Since then, it has grown to be a global phenomenon and has even worked itself into our everyday language as a verb along the likes of Google, Taser and Fedex. With the evolution of technology comes the evolution of job creation. Many people have found successful careers by partnering themselves with YouTube and have often been referred to as "YouTubers." While there are ten hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, some people have made names for themselves and rely on view counts to bring in their paychecks.
Here are some of my favorite YouTube channels: The Slow-Mo Guys, Epic Meal Time, Jenna Marbles, freddiew, Chester See, Daily Grace, Devin Supertramp, Roosterteeth and MyHarto. There are dozens of other YouTube channels that I follow, but these are among my favorite.
Looking for really cool explosions and cats jumping out of trees in slow motion? Check out the Slow-Mo Guys. Looking to cook your last meal that will end with you somehow having a double heart attack? Check out Epic Meal Time. Looking for a channel that has videos uploaded frequently that are hilarious? Check out Daily Grace or Jenna Marbles. These people have become the contemporary version of the American Dream. They started out with an idea to bring entertaining content to people and have become successful entreprenuers.
Take Roosterteeth for example. If you are a person who likes video games, comedy and animation, then you may like this site. This company has over six million subscribers and over two billion views on YouTube. It is one of the most successful companies on the internet over the last decade. Even though the company is huge now, it all started in one man's apartment with three of his friends making funny videos in a game called Halo.
If there is one channel that I would recommend for everyone to subscribe to, it would be Devin Supertramp. All of his videos inspire awe. If you have seen a video of people being shot out of a slingshot, or a video of people swinging over a canyon with the floor a thousand feet below them, or a video of people cliff jumping in Hawaii, it was most likely shot by Devin. His cinematography is out of this world, and all of his videos are worth watching. Every single video of his makes me want to get out and do something crazy. Ultimately, I inevitably close the video and end up going skydiving in Grand Theft Auto V.
The days of television are, in my opinion, over. With the technology we have today, nobody likes waiting until a certain time to watch something. Everybody wants to be able to watch something when they want -- also known as "on demand." I, for one, never watch a TV show at its scripted time. I either wait for it to come out on Netflix, or I buy a season pass on Amazon and watch it the day after it airs with no commercial break. For the rest of my entertainment content, I almost exclusively watch YouTube videos. Beware though: You can quickly get sucked into the YouTube wormhole. There have been too many times where my brain has shut off while browsing YouTube videos and my mouse finger says, "We're going on an adventure tonight!"
