Charles Ray is a contemporary sculptor. He was born in Chicago in 1953, studied sculpture at Iowa and Rutgers in the seventies, and is now based out of Los Angeles. He's not as prolific as artists we've looked at previously, like Yves Klein and Egon Schiele, but his work is no less deserving of recognition.
He tampers with scale, experiments with materials, and varies in subject matter, all to benefit the statement of a particular piece. He echoes classical sculpture by creating naturalistic forms out of pure white, even specifically referencing known masterpieces on some occasions. And though he works in such a familiar medium and aesthetic, he can simultaneously create a very uncomfortable friction with the viewer. Without further delay, here are some of his works.
The New Beetle, 2006
Sleeping Woman, 2012
Aluminum Girl, 2003
Young Man, 2012
Hand Holding Egg, 2007
Shoe Tie, 2012
