For African Americans Surviving The Aftermath Of Slavery In 2017

We weren't enslaved, but we are but we've had to deal with its effects.

Looking through racially charged Facebook posts and YouTube videos I see the same comment over and over again, "black people use slavery as a crutch."

Those who don't fully grasp the struggles within the black community may wonder African Americans don't just move on and let go of the past. They fail to recognize how slavery that ended in 1865 affects us today in 2017.

Unlike several other ethnicities, the African people did not voluntarily come to the United States during the slave era. Africans were taken from their homes and families, shackled, and placed on a boat where many were unable to survive the difficult trans-atlantic trip. Instead of being seen as humans, the enslaved africans had become property, that could be easily bought and sold.

Most of us are able to acknowledge this part of the African-American struggle.

The problem arises when African-American people bring up these facts to explain the struggles that we encounter on a daily basis. Some argue would argue that slavery ended more than one-hundred years ago, and that we need to move on. Others may wonder why we bring up the subject if we were never actually slaves. Our ancestors are the ones that should be upset because they were the people that were enslaved. Slavery has ended and the african- american people living in the United States in 2017, are no longer affected by slavery. This is one of the biggest misconceptions regarding the black community in the United States. While we we never enslaved, we are still working through the after effects of enslavement

After the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the slaves did not have the resources to go back to Africa to learn about where they had come from. Slavery lasted for 245 years. By the time slavery ended, the African people had lost their language and culture. They no longer knew where the came from from because their heritage was robbed from them. We don't know where we come from because that was robbed from us.

We aren't asking others to feel guilty, we just want others to understand that we are trying to figure out who are as a people.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
