You're in the zone, typing away ferociously, you press send on that important email, you look at your clock... oh shit. It's well past 6 p.m. Sound familiar? You, and many more Americans, are regularly working more than 40 hours per week. In fact, Gallup.com recently reported that the average work week is about seven hours longer.
So, what are the downsides of working too many hours? If you typically work more than 10 or 11 hour days, you are actually increasing your risk for of heart disease by more than 60%. As a 21 year old, I'm not entirely concerned about this, but as we have more pressures thrown our way at an early age, I have to remind myself that this might affect me even sooner in life than I expect.
Currently, I am working well over 10 hours a day. Between classes, internships, and my retail job I am definitely working long hours and barely averaging 6 hours of sleep during the week. What I'm coming to realize is it's not the amount of time you spend at work, it's what gets done. It IS possible to leave the office on time, just ask Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.
There will never be enough in the day, so stop killing yourself (literally), and focus on living a healthy life. The better you feel, the more productive you are, equaling to less time in the office.
