13 contemporary women artists' distinctive work at Quarter Gallery will be showcased throughout July. Women near and far from both Minnesotan and Mexico just completed the 2016 Women's Art Institute Summer Studio session. These determined women from all ages and backgrounds involved in exploring their full penitential and studying questions around that surround women and art. Ashley Alex, Bre Atkinson, Nancy Beatty, Chris Cinque, Marjorie Fedyszyn, Carol Elle Hettinger, Jill Johnson, Kristi Kuder, Sarah Kusa, Susana del Rosario Canteneda Quinteros, Susan Schaefer, Josie Winship and Rebecca Zenefski are the women behind the unique art pieces that will be displayed.

The program were they completed their art was at St. Catherine University's Catherine G. Murphy Gallery, where the artists were involved in an intensive four-week program. They further developed and grew as artists receiving one-on-one coaching from faculty. During this time, the women spent Monday through Friday on field trips and attending evening presentations from guest artists, art critics and art historians. The knowledgeable instructors include: Anna Garski and Professor Patricia Olson and their teaching assistants Zulma Davila and Annie Hejny.

Patricia Olson is St. Catherine University's institute director and associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History at St. Catherine University. Olson practiced painting and design for more than 30 years and is a founding member of the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota (WARM). She received an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

The exhibition is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and the Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota. The Women’s Art Institute is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History of St. Catherine University and Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

On July 8, the group of 13 artists completing the Women's Art Institute Summer Studio Intensive will have a public reception, free and open to the public from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Regis East Lobby.


The summer exhibit will be free and open to the public starting July 11- 29 from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. at the Quarter Gallery on the University of Minnesota-- Twin Cities campus. (see campus map)


Parking is available near the gallery on the street, at the 19th and 21st Avenue South ramps, and at the 5th Street South lot; hourly or event rates apply. These parking locations and the Regis Center for Art are wheelchair-accessible.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
