The lack of women in the media aligns with the many communities that are voiceless and the reality of unequal pay. The representation of women is lessened in the areas of politics or hard news topics and stereotyped by sexualizing their image to attract advertisers and increase ratings. If I were the CEO of a popular media network, I would choose to develop my company in a way where it is up to date and in touch with all Americans. I am aware that most media companies have a particular target audience and they choose to cater to that audience and their interests. If my company were to have a target audience, it would be to represent the unrepresented and the voiceless, meaning minority groups and women, without excluding topics that cater to all of us as a nation.
The role women play in the media is often times sexualized and stereotyped. In our current news outlets most women cover soft topics like education and lifestyle. In entertainment women mostly play maternal and over sexualized roles or as for immigrants, they are assigned stereotypical duties like housekeeping or hard labor assignments. If I were to run a media company, I will try to change the idea and perception of the public by assigning women to research and report on assignments that are usually completed by men. I would hire and recruit women that are passionate about journalism and that have demonstrated their professionalism and talent through education and related experiences. I am sure this is exactly how most news facilities hire their staff but I would find a balance as to where there is an equal amount of employees representing what Americans look like and what America really is.
I believe that those currently in charge of hiring and recruiting staff for newsrooms and broadcasting networks are not trying to break no barriers or change perceptions. It all starts within the human resources department. In my company, I will train recruiters to hire a diverse staff of women, Latinos, blacks and Asians. This way we can give off a different type of idea to the public. We can prove that everyone can report on world affairs, business, technology and politics. I would assign women as opinion columnists in order to reinforce the idea of the opinions of women being as important as everyone else’s.
The conditions of women in a male-dominated environment do not have to be lessened or less important. I will promote equality through what is published and what is broadcasted. I will increase opportunities for them in the newsroom and in the company. We have to start somewhere. Even when only one person is making a change others follow when it works out. It is difficult to change society ideals and rules. It is even more difficult when no one else has paved the way to make it an easier process. My goal is pretty simple and that is to be the pioneer of change in the media focusing on the positive and intellectual representation of women journalists and the overall representation of women in the entertainment industry.
