2017, a new year, a clean slate, the first of another 365 days. The start of the new year would not be complete without a few resolutions. New Year's resolutions are always a blast. Sometimes they turn out to be really beneficial and other times they become part of why our year (when the new one comes yet again) was so crappy. What is it about the new year that sparks this determination to change ourselves for the better, do something greater, or be something more than we were? Is it the romanticized idea of a fresh new start? Or is it the possibility that a new year can bring a "new you?" Maybe it's both.
There are often times we make these resolutions for ourselves, work on them for a month or two, and then give up. A perfect example includes making a resolution to go to the gym and work out. In the month of January, the gym is packed. There are plenty of people there who either work out regularly or who just told themselves to start going for the new year. By February, sometimes maybe a bit after, the gym is back to its regular capacity. It is back to the people who have always gone. Why do we give up on our resolutions? How do we go from the excitement and determination to be better and do better for the new year, to after a few months allowing the stress and obstacles that also come with it stop us?
The new year is so many things. It is most importantly an opportunity and it is up to you whether you want to take advantage of that opportunity or not. I'd like to offer two simple reminders for those of you who have made resolutions for yourselves for 2017.
Don't be afraid.
It is alright for change to happen and sometimes change is necessary. If you've made a resolution that puts you out of your comfort zone, great! Allow this change to happen, you've thought about it for a reason. Don't be afraid of the obstacles and challenges that may come along with the new year. Tackle them head on and remain strong. It gets hardBelieve in yourself
Believe in yourself. Remember who you are. Always remember your strengths. You made resolutions to improve your weaknesses, didn't you? Don't let the fear of failure stop you from achieving what you want. Resolutions don't have to be something we give up on. The door is open and the opportunity is sitting there politely waiting for you to take it. You CAN do it. As you prepare to tackle this new year, surround yourself with people who will support you and all of your changes (may they be for the better). Change is only what you make it to be, so stay committed and again, believe in yourself. 2017 isn't ready for you.
