The Winter Olympic Games are coming! The opening ceremony is February 9th in the host city this year; PyeongChang, South Korea. There are about 92 nations participating in sports like ski/snowboarding, figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey, and more. The games run for about two weeks and end on February 25th with the closing ceremonies. The Olympic Games are a way for nations to come together and the Olympic athletes are incredible.

Here are 6 reasons why you should be watching the Olympics this year.

1. The venue

PyeongChang, South Korea is a beautiful place. It is covered in snow and everything you would hope for the Winter Olympics. There are so many ski slopes covered in fresh powder and it's a skiers dream. The Alpensia Resort in Daegwallyeong-myeon will be the main focus of the Winter Olympics.

2. The sports

Figure SkatingWinter Olympic sports are somewhat different than the "regular" sports you would think of. For example, there is curling, luge, and skeleton, some unusual sports that not your average American athlete competes in. Aside from those three sports, all of the Olympic sports are intense and the athletes are incredible.

3. National pride

The Olympics will always give me and many others a sense of pride in whatever nation you come from. Whenever the Olympics come it makes me want to rally for the USA and wear red, white, and blue. Whatever nation you root for, it's always fun to come together with your own and know your nation is one team together.

4. The world comes together

No matter where you're from or even if you're interested in sports everyone comes together for the Olympic Games. It's a chance to see other nations show their athleticism and pride for their country. It's a nice chance to have a little peace in the world because the Olympics bring everyone together.

5. Opening and closing ceremonies

Both the opening and closing ceremonies are filled with entertainment and fun. There are always great artists and music. It's also a chance to see the host nations traditions and unique aspects. It's also always so satisfying to see the torch lit and the torch going out in the last ceremony.

6. The inspiration

The Olympics can get everyone inspired. If you think about how hard these athletes train for the world to see, it's amazing. Watching the competitions and the national anthem playing when your nation wins gold, it's sure to get you inspired. Not just inspired to be more athletic, it can be anything you're passionate about to be the best you can be.
