December 21st - March 20th marks the brutal and beautiful season of Winter.
The Hate:
In that long, 10 minute walk to class, it can be terrible to feel that cold air hitting your face. It means finals are upon us and we have to quickly scramble to finish 5 papers and study for 5 exams in 5 days. We cram and pull all-nighters at the library. We are stuck inside studying because it isn’t warm enough to study on the quad to at least get a tan while we overwork our brains.
The snow covered all over campus is rough. Trekking through the snow sucks, especially when the snow starts melting and turns into muddy, mushy grass or puddles on the uneven sidewalk. I could have five minutes left until my alarm goes off, but no, I am woken up by the snow blowers already up and at ‘em at 6:55 a.m.
We get tired of being surrounded by family, because it can get to be too much to handle. I find myself constantly helping my parents cooking and cleaning for parties and dinners at our house. We gain weight from all the food we can’t seem to put down or save for later.
The Love:
In the short 10 minute walk to class, it can be nice to feel that crisp air hitting your face. The cold symbolizes that snow is upon us. It brings back memories of childhood, or current times, playing in the snow with friends and sledding down the biggest hill in your town.
We get to see first snowfall and the white blanket that lays all over campus. I quickly wake up to snow blowers and shovels scrapping against the concrete for the first time, then jump out of bed to get a glimpse through the blinds in my room to see the bright white.
We get merry and can’t wait for Christmas or Hanukkah to roll around. It also means that the new year is upon us. We decide on new year’s resolutions and are able to put the past in the past. We are surrounded by our loving family and get to see each other’s eyes light up when we give gifts. We make tons and tons of cookies and eat our heart out.
I hate winter, but I love winter.
