Willow & Jaden Smith: The Misconception

Willow and Jaden are probably one of the most misunderstood siblings in pop culture.

"Free black children?" This day and age, this may sound unheard of. African American parents have been stricken with the age-old stereotype of being dominant, strict, aggressive, controlling etc. towards their kids. Honestly, the list can go on and on and on.

Well, meet the indigo children: Willow and Jaden Smith

Well let’s start off with, “What’s an indigo child?”

Indigo children are children who are believed to possess a higher state of consciousness at a very young age. They may possess strange or unusual traits to the average human but this is based all on one’s perception of what is strange and unusual.

To the ignorant mind, yes, Willow and Jaden Smith are a bit weird. But with misunderstanding comes misjudgment. The Smith children are harshly criticized for living their lives absent of care of others’ opinions. Being true to yourself and becoming completely aware of your consciousness is the central mantra for indigo children and this poses a threat to the societal norms of today.

In 2014, Willow and Jaden were interviewed by New York T Magazine, the first time being interviewed together. Let’s just say that their feedback was a bit expected.

When reading the interview myself, my initial thought was, “well what’s so shocking about it?” But then I remembered that people discredit what they don’t understand and write it off as “bulls**t.” What solidified the public’s ignorance is the backlash that followed. The Guardian called it “utter nonsense” along with Vulture labeling the interview “zen gibberish.” To top it off, TIME Magazine created a poetry generator using phrases from the interview to make haikus, in efforts to mock them. As a conscious individual, or someone who is “woke,” in layman’s terms, the topics discussed in this interview were nothing that I wasn’t aware of before. Time travel, quantum physics, Einstein’s theory of general relativity, holographic reality, prana energy and dual consciousness are pretty much basic concepts to the conscious mind. But social media’s disturbed reaction to the interview perfectly shows how out of touch we are with our spiritual self.

A day after the interview, VICE Magazine actually interviewed a philosophy professor to translate the “gobbledygook into plain English,” as if it wasn’t already. But to the surprise of most, and not to some, the philosopher comprehended all of the concepts and ideas the Smith’s discussed and concluded that “they’re pretty well educated.”

This a prime example of the misconception Willow and Jaden has suffered since I can remember. As they get older and substantially wiser, more criticism will ensue. These two beautiful and rare human beings are my favorite public figures by far, including in the realm of music too. These two individuals are pure beings of light and are making their own way through this dark world. This deserves all of my respect when many people are just “asleep,” as far as consciousness goes. Once you raise your vibrational frequency and reach a state of enlightenment, you will understand the life that they live and won’t look back once.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
