Will We Ever Be Better Than This?

Turn off the phone, tablet, TV and walk outside.

Will We Ever Be Better Than This?
Leo Jurcak

We live in a world made of screens. Whether it be the latest phone, tablet, or t.v., our eyes and time cease to be ours as technology takes over. These luminescent creatures have some how found a way to take us away from what really matters in life and we stand by as this occurs. We have all become prisoners of the digital world but we can do something to reverse this. We can start this process by putting down the smart phone, closing the laptop, stepping away from the television, and walking outside. Many of us often forget about the mysterious world we call "outside" because of technology and air conditioning. And sometimes even when we do take the brave step outside, we still let technology become the focus of our attention. STOP! Put your phone in your pocket and stop! Yes, our devices allow us to stay connected and can be of use in our lives but the majority of the time we're using them to binge watch videos of kittens playing with string and posting pictures of our passion fruit tea we just got from Starbucks. All of this can wait. Once again, put the devices away and just notice the beautiful world and people that surround you and just take it in. Feel the air and wind lightly brush by and let the warmth of the sun massage your skin. Let nature remind you why you live on the coolest planet in the solar system (besides the fact that it's the only planet we can live on due to a plethora of reasons). But don't stop there, venture out into the unknown and explore! We rely on television to inform us about the outdoors and the rest of the world when we can find these things out on our own. All we have to do is leave the devices behind and become the explorer we've all dreamt of being since we were kids. The amount of natural beauty on this planet is completely accessible to us and many of us fail to realize this. And sure many will say that traveling and exploring is expensive because everyone can't just pack a suitcase and catch the first flight out of town. But you don't have to go international, start local and explore the areas close to home that you may never even knew existed. Take a hike in the woods, go to the beach, the park, the lake, the mountains, the fields, the gardens or whatever your home offers to you. Doing these things with friends or even by yourself will always prove to be more exiting than being a casual couch potato. Plus, have the stuff we see on our phones and television are showing how much fun it is to go out and adventure but for some reason our brains stop at the image and fail to process the thought that, "hey, that looks like fun, maybe I should go try that." Yes! Go do it! Don't become a slave to technology because technology isn't going anywhere but how long these pieces of our planet will remain is uncertain. We are better than this! We don't need our devices to survive. Our very existence is determined on what happens outside of the digital world and it's time we understand the wonders and fulfillment that await us beyond the screens and the latest smartphone app. The new generations will soon forget what it means to be a part of such an incredible planet as new technologies are made to distract us from the great outdoors where opportunity awaits! It's our time to take back our lives and realize what it means to be human on Earth. The screens can wait but this might not be the case for the rest of the world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
