Why You Shouldn't Listen To Your Parents

Parents, they seem to think that they know everything... Well, they don't.

Why You Shouldn't Listen To Your Parents

First off, parents, the majority of us know all about them; they are a child's superhero, a teenager's worst enemy and an adult's best friend. Here are a few reasons why you should never, under any circumstances, listen to anything that your parents say or tell you to do.

They want the best for you.

How dare them, to want everything in your life to go well and in your own favor. They seem to try and fix things for you when they know you can't do it on your own. It's so annoying how they want for you what they didn't have for themselves.

They want to protect you.

As a child, they kept you close to their side, never letting you roam about freely, only giving you the excuse that they don't want anything bad to happen to you. How awful, right? And even as a young adult they seem to watch out for people who might be a bad influence, be out to hurt you or even use you for their own personal gain. It seems as if they can spot something bad for you before you would even think to look for it.

They don't want you to make the same mistakes that they did.

Parents, they seem to want to see you flourish into something that they never did or could. They want your life to be spent abundantly full, filled with happiness, while also accomplishing all of the things that they wished that they could have. Who do they think that they are?

They know who should be in your life and who shouldn't.

Can we just discuss how awful it is when your parents tell you that you can't date or even be friends with an individual? Like, it seems as if they can spot a fake friend from a mile away. It's so awful. We don't need real friends, when will they understand that?

They push your limits.

As a high school student, it's very easy to just "get by." Your parents most likely don't let that happen. They expect the most from us. They want to see you succeed in every way possible. Imagine you're a lemon. They are going to squeeze whatever they think that they can out of you. It's so annoying and very tedious.

They give you what you need, not what you want.

Your parents always seem to know the fine line between giving you enough compared to over spoiling you. They want to see you learn the difference between "need" and "want," an important life lesson that will be used all throughout the rest of your life - but as a child, it can get pretty old very quickly.

They love you.

Your parents were most likely already familiar with the concept of unconditional love, but you were probably one of their biggest challenges. But, even though you put them through hell and back, they most likely still love you with everything that they have, so very odious.

After reading this article, you can probably come to the conclusion that you should in fact listen to your parents. Even as an incoming freshman in college, I still have trouble with this concept - how my parents seem to almost always be in the right. It can be very annoying, but I promise, once you let them in it's all worth it. Now go tell your parents that you love them.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
