I just want to start this out by saying I’m doing my best to leave spoilers out of this little article! However, I do speak about themes and my feelings on relationships and plot devices. I do my best to reveal them more than the trailer has already. So, read at your own risk and enjoyment!
Here are several reasons why you should watch "Zootopia."
First, the pilot of the movie is fabulous! I would be more than willing (and was) to sit through this kids movie. It was truly inspiring and is, now, very dear to my heart. It continued to entertain and even thrill me a bit! As an avid horror movie fan, I still jumped a bit during the movie.
I love how social inequality is addressed within the movie. The movie easily presents the problem of social inequality and activism in both singular and group forms in a positive way. It shows you do not need to conform to social stereotypes. It also points out how even though you might fight against stereotypes put upon yourself, you may also uphold stereotypes of others. I especially liked how they handle both racial and gender stereotypes (and perhaps sexuality, too) by using humor in how idiotic they were and empowering the characters.
I love how it communicates that we can learn from our mistakes and still make a better world. It focuses on how we can just try, and we can be good enough. While I know trying does not always equal making a difference, this movie is driven by the idea of pursuance at the very beginning. I love how it not only shows how you can make a difference within the social justice world, but within your own world of friends and family, as well!
The characters show affection to each other without the need of a romantic subplot. After a long talk with one of my friends about the movie, we had very different opinions on the type of relationship between the two main characters. While I wanted there to be romance between the two main characters, there was, surprisingly, no romance added to the relationship. Yes, it is a Disney movie; romance is their bread and butter. However, this movie shows our two heroes as nothing more than lovable buddies – something I very much appreciate, even if it wasn't what I wanted at first.
The animation was great! It was like classic 2000 Disney, allowing the animation to speak in true form. Although, I’m not sure how realistic you can become on talking animals! There was little CGI, something often used to give animation that "real" looking style from hair to movements. This break from this era's use of animation brought me back to childhood and let me live in the world of Zootopia without trying to compare it to the real world.
The humor was definitely childish, but who doesn’t love a potty joke here and there? Not to mention, there was more than enough adult humor, nicely hidden, of course. It is a Disney movie!
This review might be a bit vague, but I hope it just makes you more interested to go watch it for yourself! I hope you get to see this little gem of a movie! It is one of the best-animated movies I have seen in a long time!
