School sucks. No matter where you go, you dread the feeling of going to class. Of listening to a professor drag on and on about why they deserve to stand in front of you. Of pondering the potential probability that you may end up seated next to that one guy. You know, the one that sneezes into his hands and and opens conveniently hard-to-open bags of chips subtly, but not subtly at all, then asks you what the professor just stated.
Yeah, that one. If you're anything like me, you often daydream about what you could be doing instead. All the adventures you could be going on, the people you could be meeting, and the time you could be saving. You know, to watch Netflix in your pajamas. Here's why you should be skipping class.
1. You could learn the material yourself.
You paid more for your books than you spent on lattes and frappuccinos for the month. Which is a lot. Take that money and shove it into your brain. You can learn yourself by reading the textbook. Most professors just base their lectures on the book anyways. And buy some overpriced coffee to help you focus because you probably deserve it somehow.
2. You could be sleeping.
Pretty self-explanatory.
3. There is so much of the world to explore.
The world is so vast, the possibilities endless. Sitting is lame. Sitting for two hours is even worse. Sitting next to that guy that sneezes into his hands is the worst. Leaving your class means saving time to do all sorts of things, like hitting up your favorite foodie joint. Or meeting new people. Or hitching a ride to another town. The world is your classroom. Who needs a PowerPoint to be taught when you have the expanding beauty of the world?
If you're anything like me, skipping class sounds amazing. But if you're anything like me, you hardly skip class because you can't get yourself to. Something stops you and playing hooky is more of a guilty imaginative indulgence than a reality. What's wrong with you? Why aren't you exploring?
You see, an adventure is defined as "exploring an unknown territory." Every day in class is an adventure. You meet new people by proximity, people that can struggle through a class with you and in the future will help you when you are struggling through a bad relationship. You're not losing any time. What would you be doing with the excess time when you are not enriching your mind for the future? Sleeping? You spend approximately a third of your life sleeping; I think you can spare an hour to learn from spectacular professors. Will you be taking the time to travel, both at local level and worldly levels? In class, you can travel anywhere all in one physical place. And your future excursions will be further enriched by what you have learned. It's hard to travel when you know nothing about the structures which make up a culture. And just wait till' that cute person you meet asks you what you think of the political unrest in France and all you can say is "Oh yeah, it's bad." Because the next croissants you eat won't be with him/her.
But most of all, whatever college you are at, you and all the people in your life worked hard to get there. Numerous applicants applied, but you got in. It doesn't matter whether you feel like you belong or not. You deserve it, and now, you should work to give those hope that have lost it. To grab the strings of those balloons that have begun to drift away. You are at the point in your life where you are deciding what you will do with the rest of it. It's a stressful time. But it is also the time for you to be learning all you can whenever you can. A classroom teaches you explicit material, but also implicit learning of social structures and perspectives on life. I never knew the meaning of perseverance until I waited ten extra minutes for a professor to show up and had an internal debate about the ethical nature of waiting for my professor versus going back to my dorm to play video games.
If not skipping class is for nerds, than nerd up, homies. There is a huge universe waiting for you in a classroom and after you're done, you can walk out and have another adventure. There's the secret. You've been adventuring your whole life, through every classroom and every boring day. You just didn't realize it.
So stay in class. Who knows? You might learn something. :)
