Why You Should Go To College Far Away From Home

Choosing a college can be a hard, scary time. I remember when I first started looking into where I wanted to go and was so overwhelmed by all the options. There were colleges of every size all over America that offered tons of degree programs. Although going to school far away from home has its downsides, I truly believe that it has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, I always knew that I loved the city but wanted to experience something different, even if that was temporary. When I decided to go to the University of Mississippi, a lot of people thought I was crazy for going that far away and move somewhere that was so different from Chicago. Honestly, though, this was one of the best choices I've made in my life, and here is why I think many people can benefit from it, too.

You get a fresh start.

Chances are, most people from your high school or hometown won't be going to the same college as you. You don't have to live according to the reputation you had in high school and can be whoever you want to be when you arrive at your new school.

You'll gain a new perspective on life.

Going to school far from home means that wherever you go will be different from your hometown. I went from a northern, bustling city to a southern, small town. It's been cool for me to see how different people think and act here, and I would've never gotten that had I stayed closer to home.

You'll meet people from all over the country.

Sure, you can get this at any college or university you attend, but when you go to college far from home and have breaks, you have the opportunity to go home with your friends who live closer to school. I was fortunate to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras this past year because one of my good friends was the queen in one of the parades. I was also invited to spend Labor Day in Nashville on the lake with another friend. I would've most likely not had these amazing adventures had I gone to school closer to school. And I can't wait to go home with my other friends and even bring them home to Chicago with me!

You appreciate going home more.

Obviously going to school far away can make it hard to get home unless it's a long weekend or a break. Whether you're a long drive or plane trip away, going home will always be a special thing just because it's not accessible. Start making your list of home-cooked meals you want early on so your mom can be prepared because trust me, you'll miss your favorite foods from home!

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
