Why You Should Continue Playing Sports In College
Ashley Competti

Whether or not to play softball in college really wasn't a question for me. When I tried to picture my future college life without softball, I couldn't even imagine it. My whole life consisted of school, friends, and sports, and I couldn't imagine continuing on to the next level. To anyone who is questioning whether or not to continue their athletic career, here is why continuing mine was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My teammates were some of the first people I met on campus and have become my best friends. I get to spend hours practicing and playing games with the best teammates. You spend so much more time with these people, and you form an unbreakable bond. They may drive you crazy sometimes, but it's because they become your family. They are always there to support you and be there for you when you need it the most.

It's nothing like high school or club. It is such a unique experience because you spend so much time with your teammates. You not only have reliable teammates, but you also have coaches and trainers who will help you and support you. They are there for you when you are in an emotional slump and when you are in a hitting slump.

In addition, your coaches keep you in great shape. You don't have to worry about the notorious "freshmen fifteen" of fat. You just get the "freshmen fifteen" of pure muscle from all the lifts and never-ending workouts. You don't just get in shape, you get in the best shape of your life.

Sports put you on a rigorous schedule which helps you not the procrastinate or slack off. It is one of the best things for me because I am an avid procrastinator. My coach even requires study table hours so that we stay up on our schoolwork. You have a whole team of people who motivate you to study and do well, especially because sports typically require that you maintain a certain GPA.

Sports give you a sense of purpose. There is something truly special about being part of something that is bigger than yourself. Each person has a specific role on the team, whether they are a starter or on the bench. Winning is not just about the people on the field or court. The bench cheering on the starters are just as important because it is much easier to do well when people are behind supporting you.

Sports teach you valuable lessons. You learn to accept your role on the team even if it isn't exactly what you hoped for. You are dedicated and committed to the team. Sports teach you how to work for something and be dedicated. If you aren't where you want to be, you work harder, and if you are where you want to be, you work harder to stay there.

You've been passionate about this sport your whole life, and being able to continue this passion is a rare opportunity. Many people take playing sports for granted, but as a college athlete, you recognize and appreciate how amazing and special your sport is. If you are given the opportunity to continue doing what you love, take it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
