I have had my fair share of watching different genres of anime. Over time, I have become more picky and have searched for more established stories. I suppose the main reason why I am picky over watching interesting shows is because I am a female; most of the anime shows today appeal to young men between the ages of 12 and 18. Of course, young men claim to watch anime shows for the "character development" and "story line," but the reasons all relate to the promiscuity of the show. I quickly come to my conclusions of a those kinds of shows after watching the first ten minutes of the first epsiode. However, with Demon Slayer, it caught my attention and went beyond my expectations.
The protagonist, Tanjirou is one of the greatest highlights of the whole show. He is not a typical innocent character than goes on a journey to slay demons. In the first episode, the audience gets a fair idea of his kindness and his great sense of dedication. In the first episode, Tanjirou's family is slain by a demon and he and his sister (who was turned into a demon) are the only survivors. The show does not take too long to develop his character; at first he was empathetic and was not very calculating when he had to give the final blow to saying a demon. The audience sees how his character developed into someone that has a sense of maturity and courage. Tanjirou's empathy and sense of dignity even to the enemy is a breath of fresh air and it makes him more endearing.
Besides the protagonist, the audience gets to know Tanjirou's cute sister Nezuko. She is the main reason why Tanjirou is so driven. The bond between her and Tanijrou are evident and in parts of the show, it beautifully depicts how their bond makes them move forward even against the odds. The audience gets to know other minor characters who also have some hefty character development. Seeing this kind of story arc is what makes a show more interesting to watch; as long as it is well calculated and provides the proper limelight to the other characters.
Besides the character development, there are other important factors to take into account. What really caught my eye about this show was how there were different camera angles when there was a fight scene. The CGI in the show is well calculated and is not too obvious to notice. It is beautifully incorporated with the unique art and it flows nicely.
The sound effects are also well calculated. The crunching sounds, splash of water, slashing metal, and rustle of leaves all go together when an action scene is being taken place.
One of my pet peeves in an anime show is when the main character stands around when there is a fight going on, and he's just talking about "wanting to win for the right of justice" or "fighting for all of humanity" etc. It just gets annoying to hear them keep talking and I just want to see the sparks fly right away. If I'm being honest, this show does not do that too much. However, there is usually a monologue going on in the character's thoughts and when they are thinking, the action scene is put into slow motion. It's more natural to hear the thought process of the character while their actions are in slow motion, plus it's realistic.
Overall, Demon Slayer is a well calculated show and has a lot of potential. It does have it's serious moments but it is also funny and likable. If you are looking for somethings with a little more promiscuity, then your in the wrong place. This is a show that is wholesome and puts a hefty handful of cool action and a dash of compassion in with likable characters.
