On Thursday, July 21, I attended a Luke Bryan concert. Now, I am going to be completely honest with you when I say that I am not the biggest fan of country music. To be honest, I am one of those people who considered Taylor Swift’s music to be within the country music genre and believed myself to be a country extraordinaire. I haven’t followed country music since Swift's music went into the pop genre, and I even have found country music to be a tad boring.
When I was asked if I wanted to attend this concert with my friends, all of whom enjoy country music, I was a little hesitant on my reply. But after considerable debate, I thought it would be a fun experience and a great way to spend a summer night with my friends.
The day of the concert came and I had two questions on my mind: What songs does he sing and what does one wear to a country concert? In order to answer the first question, I picked 4 of his songs and listened to them on repeat. They weren’t bad, so I figured I could maybe pull off being "country" for the night. I solved the second inquiry by choosing to wear a plaid shirt, shorts and my keds. No cowgirl boots for this girl.
I had no idea what to expect when the opening acts came on. Some songs I had heard on the radio, while others I just swayed back and forth to. It wasn’t until Luke Bryan came on stage that I realized this was going to be a great night.
Turns out, I knew more of his music than I thought. He was so upbeat on stage and made the crowd so excited. I don’t think there was one person sitting down throughout the entire concert. It was remarkable to see how he felt about his own music and the way he engaged with the crowd during each song. This was a show few performers could have done. Plus, he has an amazing body and some of his moves would have made Channing Tatum proud.
Surprisingly, though, that wasn't the best part of the night. The best part of the night was when Luke Bryan began singing one of his more somber songs and the entire crowd put their cell phone flashlights on, lighting up the whole sky. In that moment, everyone in attendance, from all walks of life, came together and united through one song. Did I know the song? No. Did it stop me from living in the moment? Absolutely not! It was a very beautiful song that seemed to touch everyone in the audience and I couldn't be happier to have been a part of that.
So the next time you want to knock down country music or question why I would ever attend a country concert, think about all the fun that you can have without even knowing the words to the songs being performed. Spending time with your friends, listening to good tunes and maybe having a drink or two can make the night one you will never want to forget.
Plus, Luke Bryan is super hot! Just saying.
