Why You Should Appreciate Your Single Status

Just because you're alone, doesn't mean you have to be lonely.

Why You Should Appreciate Your Single Status

I'm going to start this off with a warning: this is not an article bashing relationships, but rather that the idea of not being in one is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure your relationship is wonderful, but so is my life being single. And here's why!

I’ve been in a relationship a majority of my life, almost all of my life, ever since my first boyfriend in the seventh grade. I had breakups and periods of being single, but basically nothing more than a couple of months (I know, very strange). Coming out of my most recent relationship, I realized how little time I had been single during my life. Now, when I talk about being single, that does not include post breakup depression periods or when you’re “talking” to someone. I’m talking hardcore, no attachments, on your own, don’t need no man, single.

Everyone gives being single a negative connotation because this status is usually attached to feeling lonely, unwanted and being generally worse off than being in a relationship. However, once you’re over your breakup and take time for yourself, you realize how great being single is. It is more than “not being in a relationship,” it’s a world full of possibilities.

You can literally do whatever YOU want (I mean, don’t do anything illegal, but you know what I mean). There is no one to check schedules or plans with, no one to keep in mind when making decisions, you go by what you want to do. You also have unlimited “me” time. Again, I feel like most people think this is a bad thing. It’s not! Go take a walk, take a bath, have a glass of wine (or the bottle), read a book, watch television, WHO CARES? Definitely not your nonexistent boyfriend who probably would be bitching the whole time. You’re on your own and this should be a good thing.

In addition to really helping your mental state by spending time with yourself and more importantly learning to love and appreciate yourself, here is a small list I compiled of more great things about being single:

  1. You don’t have to buy watches, wallets or whatever other boyfriend gifts we purchase every anniversary, birthday and Christmas.
  2. Ditto with the Instagrams. EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY. How many different ways can we caption a picture of our boyfriends and us?
  3. No more drunk fights. No matter how great your relationship is, we all know we fight when we’re drunk. But now, you can party free of tears and screaming. HOORAH!

Now, go spend that watch money on something for yourself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
