We've all seen the heartbreaking commercials. There's an up-close shot of a cat or dog's face with Sarah McLachlan singing in the background. Absolutely tear jerking, right? But we change the channel instead of sitting through the whole commercial. Why? Because anyone with a heart finds the image of a sad, innocent animal upsetting. However, instead of changing the channel, why don't we DO something? If you are fortunate enough to be able to own a pet you should always adopt. If the heart-wrenching commercials are not enough to convince you, then here are some solid reasons as of why you should adopt a pet and not buy:

1. You will become a Hero

Who has ever wanted to be someone's hero? When you adopt from an animal shelter you are saving a life and becoming their hero. Without your love and compassion, they would not be getting this second chance of having a home and best friend.

2. Over-populated animal shelters

According to the ASPCA over 6.5 million animals are entered into shelters ever year. This high number can cause over-populated animal shelters leading to the harsh reality of euthanasia. Even in "no kill" shelters animals are often left with a much worse fate of going insane due to confinement, according to PETA. This leaves animals with either the fate of insanity or death, but YOU can change that fate. When you adopt, you are not only saving one life, but also giving the other animals in the shelter better living conditions and hope for a better life.

3. You can find one that fits your unique personality

Isn't there a saying there is "someone for everyone"? I believe this fits especially when it comes to adopting a pet. When you adopt, you have the liberty of choosing a pet of any age and breed/breeds.

Out of the millions of pets that need adopting, there is definitely (at least) one perfect for you! Also, if you are nervous about adopting, you can always volunteer at the shelter and build a bond with the animal before making the commitment of adopting them.

4. Fight against puppy mills

When you adopt you are helping the fight against puppy mills. A puppy mill is defined as "an establishment that breeds puppies for sale, typically on an intensive basis and in conditions regarded as inhumane." When you buy a pet you are contributing to this cruel business. An animal shelter's main concern is the animals happiness and health, whereas puppy mills are just out to make a profit.

5. You know what you are adopting

All animals admitted to a shelter undergo behavioral screening as well as needed vaccinations. The workers at the shelter can provide you with the animal's history, what their personality is like, and everything else you need to know about the animal so there are no surprises.

6. You will save money

So not only are you saving a life, but in the end you are also saving money, which you can now use on treating your new pet/best friend! Adoption fees are always less than the regular amount it is to buy a pet. Also, the adoption fees usually include the cost of the animal's first-year vaccinations and spay/neuter.

7. You are supporting a great cause

When you adopt from an animal shelter you are supporting a great cause/charity. By paying the adoption fees, you are helping these non-profit organizations in their cause to saving animals and providing them with a second chance at life.

8. Their gratitude is endless

When you adopt, they understand what you are doing for them, and do not take it for granted. When you save their life, they try to do the same for you!

If you are at a point in your life where adopting and owning a pet is not an opinion for you, but you want to help and make a difference, you can always volunteer at your local shelter and donate. Anything you do can change their life!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
