Why You Need a Best Friend In College

First semester of college. Ah, what a trying time. You just said goodbye to your family and now you are scoping out your new environment for the next 4 years, realizing there are absolutely no familiar faces. Excellent. You have to start all the way over again. Meeting friends can be difficult but once you've found just that one person you can always rely on, college life will be a little easier.

College challenges you to find yourself which can be pretty tough. Maybe you were the smartest kid in your high class and now you've reached college where everyone was the smartest at their high school. You are a little fish in a big pond and finding out what makes you special about you can be a frustrating and challenging process. The role of your best friend in this situation is to help you figure out you. They may be able to tell you things about yourself that you did not realize. Your best friend will support, encourage, and guide you. They can help you get your frustrations out, relieve your stress and help you explore hidden talents, passions, and interests. Your college best friends are going to know a lot about you since you essentially live with them. They know your sleeping habits, morning habits, and eating habits. They will know what ticks you off, what calms you down, and how to help you through almost anything. Best friends are there to push you and also be a shoulder for you to cry on when you’re homesick or just when you are having a low day. Finding yourself in college is a personal struggle that almost everyone goes through in college. Going through it with your best friend makes it that much better so you all can grow together.

When you get to college, your life seems to be a bit chaotic. You have no true system of prioritizing or scheduling yet and you have a million tasks for every club you are in on top of all the homework assigned to you. Your best friend helps keep your life on track. They may even sometimes remind you of your tests, meetings, and events more than you can remember. Adjusting to your new lifestyle can become hectic making you feel a little overwhelmed. Your best friend can help keep your stress levels down and help you breathe when everything just seems like too much. Taking time to just relax in college is essential to prevent you from losing your mind and who better to take a breather with than your bosom buddy.

The greatest reason as to why you need a best friend in college is you need someone to make a complete joke out of everything. The funny moments that you share in the late nights in the dorm are going to be some of the most cherished moments to you once you have graduated. College can get very stressful and sometimes you have to let loose and just be silly. Being silly with your best friend seems to be more intense in college as if you have regressed into an 11-year-old child. Having your best friend around will turn awkward and uncomfortable moments into the best memories of your college years. Even the most trying and stressful times such as finals week can end up being one of your best memories. That’s what having a best friend is for. They make you laugh and smile when you really need a pick-me-up and will help you get through rough patches by embracing all of the beautiful moments life has to offer.

College is a period of growth, challenges, and realization of who you are. It can be a critical time in your life and no one will understand what you are going through more than your best friend in college. You will cry together, laugh together, eat the same horrible cafeteria food together, and grow together. Your best friend will help you reach your dreams by showing you how great you are and push you to realize your greatness. With the help of your best friend, those sour moments you experience in college will turn sweet and you will remember them for a lifetime.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
