Why "You Care Too Much" Is Bulls**t

Like the majority of my articles, this one was inspired by an event in my own life. However, unlike the majority of my articles, this one if not meant to be humorous. This is a b***h-fest about our modern society. (OK, maybe it is similar to my other articles.)

If I had a dollar for every time someone throughout my life has told me, "It's because you care too much" I could probably pay for an entire semester at Emory (this is a hyperbole, people, for all the annoying assholes who will text me, "You know that means someone has said that to you at least four times a day, every day that you're been alive, right?" And, yes, I do. Now shut up and spend your time doing something way more productive than figuring that out.) And it's true. Anyone who knows me knows that I am the epitome of a bleeding heart. I will do anything and everything to make the people closest to me smile, well aware of the fact that they may never return the favor.

Is it exhausting? Yes. Do I regret it? Never.

Maybe, having Buddhist parents may have had a little bit of influence on this mindset. Growing up, I remember my parents telling me this quote multiple times. You never lose anything from sharing your love and your happiness with others.

In our modern age, apathy has become the social norm. It's all about who can care less and be the biggest asshole to one another. Maybe that's why depression rates are higher in college students than they've ever been in the past. So bear with me, and let me explain to you why the saying, "you care too much" is bulls**t -- absolute and total.

Because humans are the only creature that has been proven to feel love.

By some power out there in the universe, (I'm not here to question how you believe humans came into existence) we're the ones who feel love. Now I'm sure you believe that your dog loves you as much as you love him, and I don't doubt that, but when it comes to science, humans are the only creatures that have been proven to feel love.

Love is an incredible thing. Love has inspired multiple poems, sonnets, ballads, plays. Love inspires our day to day life, our every waking moment. If it wasn't for your mommy and your daddy loving each other very much you wouldn't even be in existence. So why waste this perfect gift?

And it's not just romantic love I am speaking on here. It's the love that you feel for your parents, your siblings, your closest friends or that professor who inspires you. That emotion, the sheer fact that we have the ability to feel that emotion, is unbelievable. And what? You want to waste it on being apathetic. Would you pretend like you don't care about anyone or anything? Nature has given you a gift, and you just want to say, "F**k you, nature, take it back?"

No. You're dumb. Care. Love. Find something you're passionate about and dedicate your heart and soul into it. Because in the end, you'll be glad you did.

Because in the end, life is short. Like -- really, really short.

The Earth was created approximately 4.5 billion years ago. Our galaxy? Approximately 13.21 billion years ago. Assuming you live to life expectancy, you will have officially be on the Earth for a total of .0000000017 amount of the time that the Earth has been in existence.

Because life is so short, why would you not tell someone that you care about them each and every chance they you get? As someone who has lost an ungodly amount of people in my life, believe me when I say that people leave at any time. When you never know when your life is going to end, why not live every day as if it's your last?

This does mean go out and do a bunch of stupid crap. This means that make sure every person in your life knows how much they mean to you every day. This means never let yourself hold grudges. It means let go of useless anger and forgive those who have done you wrong. If it was your last day on Earth, would you really want to end it being mad at your best friend because she got a stain on your new Brandy Melville top? No.

Every day is a gift. You woke up today. You're still alive. So spread your love and care to everyone you can because you don't know that you'll wake up tomorrow.

Because it's always better to be the one who cared more.

Everyone in our modern society is so afraid to be the one who cares more. For some odd reason, passion and love seem to be a negative thing now. But in the end, realize how ridiculous that is. Do you know what it means to be the one who cares less? Do you know what it means to be the person who only takes in friendship and never gives? It means that you're an asshole.

Why is this a desirable thing? Why do you want to be a leech? So give your love and care to those closest to you and return love when it is given to you.

Every relationship, both romantic and platonic, never works if there is an imbalance of effort being put into the relationship. So make sure that if someone reaches out to you, reach out back to them. Everyone just love everyone and it makes life so much better.

It will make you truly happy.

Anyone who knows me knows that my life is almost constantly a shit show, but the thing is, I'm one of the few people I know who can honestly say that I am happy. I am 110 percent truly happy with my life at the moment. And this peace and happiness only came when I made a promise to show the people closest to me how much I care for them and appreciate them every day. So believe me when I say that if you also adopt this philosophy in your day to day life, it will make you happier, too.

Finally...

So if you took the time to procrastinate from your homework to read this, you have the time to text those closest to you and tell them how much you care for them. You have the time to surprise your best friend with a cookie if they're having a bad day. You have the time to text someone and simply say, "I'm happy you're in my life."

So do it. Now. And be happy.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
