Notoriously, sports fans have been declaring the love of two separate teams of the same professional sport. Frankly, I wouldn’t even call them sports fans. Many claim that it’s acceptable because one of their teams is from their hometown and the other is from the middle of nowhere or a place they’ve never actually step foot in.
It really grinds my gears when people go crazy over a team they have no connection with. I understand there are some cases in which you are just kind of born into it. My mom passed me the torch too, but I think you should only take it if you really understand how true fans feel when they see their team on the field, watch them make the playoffs or watch every single televised game religiously.
I’m not saying those are ground rules for what makes a good sports fan. But, I can guarantee more than half of Americans who declare themselves as a fan of a specific team, have a backup team in case their first choice isn’t so hot that season, don't be a fair-weather fan.
You can really only love one team in each sport. I think it’s unethical and a form of cheating on your team once you commit your loyalty to something else. Take Ben from "The Bachelor," for example, he said, “I love you,” to JoJo and Lauren and all of America went crazy.
Well, that’s how your first choice feels when they realize their fans aren’t 110 percent dedicated to them every day. You can’t half love someone, just as you can’t half love a team.
We love them for good and for bad, sickness and in health and fortunately, there are a lot of people who understand that. So, to the real, downright, sports fans of the world, thank you.
On the other hand, I see people all the time picking and choosing who they want to root for that year. You may not have ties to a team and that’s okay, but don’t pretend you have been a fan of Golden State for two years.
If you don’t light up when someone talks about them, cry when they win the World Series, blush as they only shoot 20 percent from the field but still love them, or have the urgency to know as much as you can because you feel a part of the team yourself, then I suggest you give up on “your team.”
I know this was a rant and may sound like I am a high and mighty sports-fan-appointer, but I am just an honest, loving, heartfelt, sports fan and I will stand behind my team even if they have the worst record in the league, and you should too.
