Do you know that feeling you get when you walk into the gym, notice every machine is open for business, work your brains out, go home, take a shower, and get a good night's sleep? After a great workout, you feel like a new person. A great workout can completely change your attitude and almost guarantee a better day. Unfortunately, here at the Leach, one of these workouts is about as likely as ESPN saying something positive about FSU.
The equipment at the Leach is not the issue, here. The amount of machines to do work on is actually outstanding. What makes the Leach so terrible is the different types of people you will find working out there. Also, even with the amount of equipment they have, trying to find an open machine involves standing around waiting for upwards of twenty minutes.
First there is the muscle head maniac. This guy looks like a Greek God on steroids. He is lifting weight that would put the average guy in a coma. He is flexing his biceps in the mirror, lifting up his shirt to wipe sweat off his face even though the staff makes you carry around a towel at all times (we all know you are checking out your abs, guy), and he is walking around the gym like he is Mufasa and you are Simba. This guy is actually the worst.
Then there is that ditsy girl wearing Nike spandex shorts that are so tiny they are almost invisible and a "do you even lift" tank. Of course, before going to the gym, this girl has to put on pounds of make-up so if or when she starts to break a sweat, she will still be able to impress the Greek god guy over by the free weights. This girl is more worried about getting a good enough SnapChat to put on her story than actually exercising. She will sit on a machine texting her friends or walk at three miles per hour on the treadmill until she concludes that her Snaps are up to par and it is time to grab a smoothie and recover for three weeks until her next 'workout.'
The biggest problem with the Leach is, by far, the crowds. Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., finding an open machine in the Leach is borderline impossible. Hundreds of FSU students flock to the Leach at any point during the day; the crowd is, seriously, unbearable.
There is hope for students at Florida State. I have heard that Gold's Gym is usually much less crowded than the Leach. Plus, there is always the Wellness Center as a second option. While the Wellness center may not have the abundance of equipment that the Leach has, it has a relaxed atmosphere and could provide the workout that we all want.
