I get asked all the time why I choose to work at a daycare. “Don’t you want to work with people who are more than 2 feet tall?” “How can you change diapers all day?” “You went to college for that? All you do is play. Your job isn’t what you really want to do for your whole life, right?” Well, I tell everyone that I love my job. It is one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done in my life.
The Impact I Have
Every single day, I get to impact the lives of children who spend most of their time away from their families. I teach them more than their letters and numbers but manners and life lesson. The moment that a child finally understands something is the best part of the day. When you walk in your classroom after a long weekend or being off from work for a few days, you get the biggest hugs in the world.
Getting Messy
People may think its weird that I enjoy getting messy but, it shows that I had fun. It shows that my students had fun. It is so important that my kids have fun and getting messy shows the fun that we had. One thing I have learned is do NOT wear white. It never ends up going home clean.
The People
I work with some of the most amazing people. They are the nicest people who have really impacted me as a person and as a teacher. They have helped me see different ways to think about things and how I can become a really great parent when I have my own children. They are really role models for me and for the students.
The Kids
These kids are amazing. They come up with the craziest things. One day I told a little boy to stop licking another student in the classroom. I know its gross that he was licking another kid but that is something that happens many times in the day care. Back to the story, the little boy told me that he wasn't licking the other kid but he was kissing him like a dog. I was both shocked and grossed out. I would have never in my thought of something like this. This is something that I hear very often because the kids are so creative and smart.
I am so happy and proud to be a teacher at a daycare. I love every minute of the messy hand, dirty diapers, and snotty noses. Each one of my students is a blessing to have in my life and I am so excited to be able to spend time with them.
