Five whole weeks off. That means no homework, no class, no stress, no complaints ... right? Not so fast. To everyone else in the world this would be a dream. I mean who wouldn't want to wake up every morning with the entire day open? But it is not as fun as it is cracked up to be. You see, high schoolers and younger kids don't understand it and adults just don't remember, but college is pretty awesome while it's in session and being on break is boring.
You see the first few days, those are great. No more late night cram sessions and stress eating. You have the motivation to get up and go for a nice long workout and maybe do some light reading. After about 12 hours, once you have done both of the "working out" and "reading" you find yourself looking around the room because what now?
During break you're back home and it's strange. It almost feels as if college was all some elaborate dream that you just woke up from. You are bumping into old neighbors thinking you thought you would never see them again. Oh how wrong you were, you will see them twice a week. And they will probably say, "still home?" Yes, and for the record its only been a day since you have asked last.
The grocery store has become your new go-to place. I mean what else is there to do really? There is always something to buy at the store so why not just stay there? Maybe meet some older folks doing their shopping between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m. They might have some fun stories to distract you for 30 minutes.
You quickly become lonely without all of your friends. You are so used to spending all hours of your day with everyone and now, you are just like a sad puppy waiting for its owner by the door. Then when your younger siblings finally come home you beg them to rush through or abandon their homework altogether just so you can have someone to hang out with.
You are constantly driving. Now for most of us its been months since being behind the wheel of a car and we miss it. However, it's fun for a little while, but being a chauffeur for your siblings gets old real quick and you have a newfound respect for your parents and all the trips they took driving you to and from soccer practice.
Oh and it's freezing. You see in the summer you can enjoy the warm sun, go for a nice afternoon stroll, or lay outside and tan. But the only thing you can catch from stepping onto your driveway in December is frost bite. So you have the whole gloomy dark forecast to look forward to as well.
Alright alright, so winter break is not exactly paradise. But it does give you the opportunity to save some extra cash you know you will be spending as soon as you hit campus at the end of January. Try and make the best of it because when you are trudging through a blizzard to get to class in February you will miss these lazy days.
But remember if anyone asks, "So, what did you do all day?" Ignore them, they are outsiders, they don't get us.
