Donald Trump has made a mockery of the Republican party since he launched his presidential campaign in June of 2015. He doesn’t carry himself the way a president should: with polish, dignity, integrity, and respect. Instead, he resorts to narcissistic and childish antics which include but are certainly not limited to saying he could shoot someone and still receive votes, and making fun of a handicapped reporter.
In the state the country is in with gun violence, gun control advocacy and the tension surrounding the second amendment, Trump saying, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, OK, and not lose any voters,” is irresponsible, inappropriate and insensitive. He was using it to show how loyal his supporters are. However, if I was a Trump fan and heard him say this, I wouldn’t think twice about rescinding my support and giving it to a candidate who didn’t talk about his or her supporters as if they are mindless leeches who will blindly follow him or her no matter what.
In regards to Trump mocking the physically disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski, he claims that is not what he was doing. “I merely mimicked what I thought what would be a flustered reporter trying to get out of a statement he made long ago. If Mr. Kovaleski is handicapped, I would not know because I don’t know what he looks like. If I did know, I would definitely not say anything about his appearance.” Kovaleski, along with many others including myself, found that statement to be hard to believe seeing as Kovaleski covered Trump for six years when he worked for the New York Daily. Regardless of if Trump remembers him or not, though, the jerking motions he made that he believed a flustered reporter would like still highly resembled a handicapped person.
All of the hype surrounding Donald Trump, whether it is good or bad, is only making the media swarm to him. It doesn’t matter if you agree with his policies or not. He is not the type of person who needs to have the power the Oval Office brings and if we continue to talk about him, that is exactly where he will be. You don’t have to be Anti-Trump to see the way he behaves. There are plenty of Americans who agree with his policies, including myself, but just don’t like him. On the other hand, there are plenty of Americans who are completely Anti-Trump anything, like the celebrities threatening to leave the country if he is elected and the protestors at his rallies who are responsible for giving him more free publicity. Causing chaos and getting kicked out of his rallies are not ways to ensure he doesn’t win the Republican nomination or eventually become president. Our country has become so obsessed with debauchery and hatred that we no longer build anything up, but instead do anything possible to destroy something we don’t agree with. Start putting the same amount of passion into supporting your favorite candidate that you put forth protesting Trump. Causing a scene in his rallies will make Trump say things like “I’d like to punch him [a protestor] in the face,” which causes his supporters to do it for him. However, getting kicked out of his rally after being disruptive and causing a scene destroys any credibly you have. If you truly believe in protesting, do it peacefully. Don’t act like a fool to purposefully try to get a reaction out of him or his supporters, which should be common sense now and in future elections.
Many people are going to support Trump because they agree with his policies and don’t care what kind of person he is. For those who don’t want to refer to him as “President Trump” in 2018, stop giving the media reasons to report on him.
