Why We Need a Little Christmas Now

It's time for "peace on earth, goodwill to all."

Why We Need a Little Christmas Now
Allyson Szymanski

Yes, I am aware it is November. Yes, I understand that just because all of the department stores are ready for the Holiday rush the second Halloween ends, does not mean that I have to be. And, yes, I know there are people who refuse to even mutter the word "Christmas" until after Thanksgiving comes to a close. However, with this winter season approaching, it seems many of us need Christmas more than ever; and this Christmas has the opportunity to change the world.

Amidst the chaos of politics, war, and corruption, the annual Christmas decree of "peace and goodwill" is one that has become a desperate cry. Throughout America, and throughout the world, 2016 has taken its toll. With the election of a new president, outbreaks in gun violence, and noticeable influxes of discrimination and terrorism, the idea of "peace on earth" seems to have become nothing more than that: an idea. While many may not have been personally affected by some of the year's events, as a society we can not afford to turn a blind eye to those who have. But the question that arises to many is what, as just one person, can be done to help mitigate problems that are so much bigger than ourselves? Well, perhaps all we need to start is some of that good old-fashioned Christmas cheer.

No, I'm serious. Think about it.

What if this Christmas season, "Peace on earth, and goodwill to men" wasn't just a saying, but an attitude? What if all of the clichés of Christmas being "the most wonderful time of the year" actually came to fruition? Can you imagine a world in which all of the good wishes in Christmas carols were taken to heart, all the Bob Cratchit's and Tiny Tim's warmed the spirits of every Ebenezer Scrooge, and every one of us George Bailey's really did understand our importance? But what if this "Christmas Spirit" didn't end after December 25th, or even December 31st? What if the thought of bringing "joy to the world" lasted all year long?

So many of the problems that are currently weighing down our world could see massive improvements if we as a society took this simple step. If as individuals we were able to understand the importance of offering "goodwill towards men," the impact it could have on our society, and on our world, could make all the difference. Many voices have been left unheard, many thoughts and ideas have been left repressed or unspoken, and so very many people are entering into this holiday season with feelings of concern and confusion. Make Christmas 2016 the one that puts us that much closer to making the idea of "peace on earth, goodwill to all," more than an idea; and don't let it end after December 25th, 31st, or even January 1st.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
