We are the voice for the voiceless

#WhyWeMarch

I'm well aware this is a controversial article, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be written. I'm also well aware this may offend many, but the millions killed by abortion more than offends me and should offend you, too.

That's right; over a million lives are lost to this legal and promoted procedure each year. Whatever your opinion on this issue, the enormous statistics should be heart-breaking.

Imagine how different our world could be if only one of these unborn children were given the chance to live.

I could stay silent on this issue. I really could. And many do. Yet, the unborn have absolutely no voice, absolutely no say to defend their very lives. But I do. Which is why I, along with hundreds of thousands of others, will be in D.C. on January 22, standing up for these most vulnerable members of our society.

Our country was founded on the principles that all are "endowed by their Creator" with the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," but have we really strayed so very far? Currently, the Supreme Court maintains the right to privacy- which is not even actually mentioned in the Constitution, although it could be considered implied- is deemed to hold more weight than the right to life. In the recent past, maybe privacy even was the message, pushing for abortion to be "rare, safe, and legal." Now, it seems our government is protecting the right to convenience over the lives of its weakest members.

Let's talk about these weakest members. They're derided worse than any other group. But are these "fetuses" really just a "clump of cells" or "a bunch of tissues?" The word "fetus" actually comes from Latin meaning "offspring" or "little one." Fetus should not be used as any less human of a term than adolescent or elderly; it's just a stage of development. Furthermore, if you think about it, we're all made up of clumps of cells and a bunch of tissues.

Six weeks in, unborn babies have a heartbeat. At ten weeks, they responds to touch, and all of their organs are formed and fully functional. At thirteen weeks, they have unique fingertips. And the list goes on and on. Keep in mind, by nine weeks at least, the baby can feel the pain of an abortion.

We don't just march for the unborn; we march for the mothers too. We long to show them that they have a brave and beautiful option before them: the option of life. We don't want them to have to live in regret or to lose the gift of motherhood. And we want to share with them resources they have to keep their child.

Whether you can be at the March for Life or not, will you join me in standing up for life?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
