Let me start by saying, this is not some article or blog post from a cold-hearted, single girl who doesn't have a guy on Valentines Day. I'm not here to hate on the day or shame you for liking it, but let me just put into words why I do not think the day should exist.
Valentines Day is the one day of the year where couples give each other flowers and chocolates and spend money on jewelry and expensive dinners and tell each other how much they love one another over and over again. Personally, I find this ridiculous. And not just ridiculous because of all the things people do for each other, that's nice, who doesn't love getting flowers and chocolates or treated to a nice dinner? But, why can't this happen any other day that isn't considered a "holiday."
It is not that I hate Valentine's Day, it's that I hate the idea of it. I'd be lying if I said I've never "celebrated" the day. Cause I have. I've been given flowers and taking to dinner, but I've also stayed in and ordered take out and watched a movie and i still felt exactly the same way towards the person.
The day is filled with expectations and pressure to do something so extravagant and out-do your friends. Everyone always posts lovey dovey Instagram pictures with such cute captions and people screenshot them and send them to friends saying "i want this."
It shouldn't be just a day. The way you act on Valentine's Day should be the way you act every day towards someone you care about. No, i'm not saying go out and get them flowers and chocolates every single day, but that love and affection should be shown. Maybe occasional flowers every once in awhile, but not just on February 14th.
So girls, if you don't have someone on Valentine's Day, it's okay. There's nothing to sit home and cry about or be upset about. But, if you are one that strongly believes in this day and may be a little upset, go out with friends, go treat yourself, there are plenty of things for you to do on this day that have no relation to red hearts and cute candies.
My point is, stop giving money to Hallmark for one specific day that should be celebrated every day you are with that person you care about. Love and affection doesn't come with a price.
