Why does it seem like schools just want to suck money out of already poor students. I'm not one to usually complain about such things because I am certainly blessed enough to be getting a fantastic education at Tennessee already, but the news of UT raising undergrad tuition by three percent struck me funny.
At first I was upset. I mea, why should we pay more so the next generation can enjoy a better school or better buildings thanks to our funding. Why should something like that jeopardize a ton of people I know to lose their education? We don't even know if we will get a good job with this education. All we know is that Saturdays in the fall are amazing, and our funding won't effect good ol' SEC football, but then I had an epiphany.
See I'm a big "environmental guy." And I think it is super selfish to hear about the generation before us blowing off environmental problems because it doesn't apply to them "right now" and the next generation can take care of it. When they were asked to drive more efficient and less physiqued sedans on the roadways, many said no because "someone else probably would." Well, isn't that what we are doing?
UT is asking us to pay more for a degree that hasn't even paid itself off yet. Why did we all come here? Because it would be the time of our life? Sure. But also because we thought it would be the best school to set us up for success in life. Now why should we doubt that? Isn't it just an act of trust? The problem is, it's "the man" we have to trust, and if anyone knows anything about "the man" it's that he takes an acting role in our government, and it's pretty difficult to have a positive view of our government sometimes. I mean, who doesn't feel like our government uses our taxes for crap sometimes? I know I do.
But our school is not the government. They just want to give us a chance and the next group of students a chance, too. It's a domino effect. If the first domino gets pushed and decides not to fall, then how will the big ending ever happen?
No, UT did not pay me to write this and I don't owe anything to anyone. I am just going to swallow my complaints for now and trust in this university. After all, they haven't let me down too much. Come on, the new UC is ballin' and someone before me payed extra for me to have that. It's about being part of a legacy. I want my kids to come here and I want them to love it! And that certainly won't happen in 2050 if all their buildings haven't been renovated since 2000. That's like Estebrook people. Estebrook.
Yeah, it sucks, but it will suck even more when our kids don't understand why we ever went to this dump hole of a school cause it will look like that too them. Plus, we can't have Alabama having better technology than us.
One question I do still have for UT is, if you are going to raise my tuition, then can you PLEASE GOD lower the price of literally anything else I buy on a daily basis?
