As the New Year quickly approaches, people are probably starting to think of their next year's resolution. For most this usually includes some optimistic, but an extremely unrealistic goal. If everyone just decided to do something simple and practical each year, maybe they would actually stick to it. Maybe trying mushrooms isn't your idea of a resolution, but even a small random resolution could make your life a little more interesting. In light of inspiration from this little idea, here are 15 random ideas to keep in mind going into the New Year. Some are fun, some are selfless, and some are just odd.

1) Go to the Dollar Store more.

The Dollar store is an easy way to satisfy a craving for shopping. You can go to the toy section and buy something cheap and fun to lift your spirits, or maybe the Tupperware section to buy a cute random cup to add to your collection. Either way you get something enjoyable and cheap.

2) Try a new hairstyle.

Maybe dye your hair or try the haircut you've always wanted but never had the hoo-ha's to actually get. Or just do double French braids instead of single, or part in the middle instead of to the right. It's your hair, I won't tell you how to style it.

3) Try new foods.

Even if it's just an appetizer or a new combo at a fast food place, go out of your comfort zone. Once I tried eating fish for the first time and since then my world was changed. A recent encounter with mushrooms has also exposed me to the fact that I didn't actually hate the fungi. I had my best friend try calamari once despite her adamant refusal on grounds of it being squid, and now she's a frequent calamari eater.

4) Don't let your laundry pile up to the size of Mt. Everest.

No one wants to tackle that... No one.

5) Don't keep old clothes you don't wear.

If you can't remember the last time you wore it, and the only scene you can picture wearing it is highly unrealistic, donate it. Someone could be benefitting off your discards.

6) Learn a new trick.

Whip it out when someone asks what your talents are. That'll end the conversation. Maybe it can be knitting or spin a plate (mine), or that party trick where you blow a ping-pong ball above your face and it just floats there suspended. It's amazing.

7) Finish a chapstick.

I saw this on twitter, and personally, this is my next battle.

8) Make more phone calls to old friends.

If you're away at school, face time a friend from home every once in awhile and be all nostalgic, it's fun.

9) Stop taking everything personally.

If someone isn't extremely warm-hearted towards you in passing, don't automatically assume they hate you, or they're a rude person. When the line is slow at a store, or a drive-thru, don't curse the world for your own awful luck. Appreciate the fact that someone is on the other end working, no matter how slow. You're not the only person in the world.

10) Work on your fake laugh.

Why not perfect that little fake (but well-meaning) laugh you give when someone tells a bad joke.

11) Get a tattoo.

Yes, seriously. Even if it's super small and very hidden, unless this idea is extremely offending to your core being, you should just do it. The whole process is fun! From walking in and asking for it, waiting while they plan it, actually getting the thing, and then walking out with a whole new addition to yourself, I can honestly say it's one of the best experiences.

12) Be an instigator.

In the sense that you try to inspire your friends to do more fun and out of the ordinary things.

13) Tell the truth more.

To yourself and to others.

14) Sing more... really really loudly.

Definitely a mood lightener.

15) Be more fun.

This is the more encompassing of my little fifteen resolutions. This one can be accomplished with little behavior changes, that are all about mindset. Between being more lighthearted with people and not letting things get to you, to trying the unknown every once in awhile, to even buying more little things to make you happy, there are countless ways the become a better person. Anyone of these small changes can help you feel more accomplished, more giving, or just generally happier. So, why not give one a try?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
