In light of the upcoming holidays, our current president has brought back the nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus to be displayed on the White House grounds.
As if he could not be more insensitive.
Although Presidents before Donald Trump have used the nativity scene, it still should not be allowed on the grounds of the White House due to its insensitive nature to the plethora of remaining religions cohabiting in America.
Using the nativity scene is completely disrespectful towards Americans who do not practice Christianity. It is a slap in the face towards Americans of a different religion and paints the picture that their own President has no reverence for them.
I understand that America was founded upon the principles of Christianity, however, this was before America was morphed into a melting pot of different cultures and religions. The White House should be a place of neutrality in which politics and governmental affairs are to be discussed, not religion. Religion is a practice that should be exercised within ones home and place of worship, not the White House.
Although the constitution states that every U.S. citizen is entitled to religious freedom, the President of the United States should still remain a neutral figure.
If Trump wishes to practice Christianity and set up his own nativity scene, he should do so in the confines of his personal home, not on the public eye of the White House. Plastering the United States as a Christian nation excludes those who practice other religions, as well as those who do not identify with a religion.
On top of this, Trump as also refused to use the term "Happy Holidays" and instead bring back "Merry Christmas." Again, this is completely disrespectful towards those of a different religion. As a national, and international figure, Trump should remain neutral during the holidays, rather than promoting a single religion. Obama sometimes refrained from using the term "God" during his time as President due to the sensitivity of offending anyone and their beliefs, however during Thanksgiving week, Trump used this word eight times in his press conferences.
Many people will argue against this and exclaim that those of different religions in America should stop being “so sensitive” towards the fact that the President is putting the Christian religion on a national platform during the holiday season. However, if another President put something on the front lawn of the White House pertaining to the Islamic or Jewish religion, wouldn’t Christians also be offended?
