When I was a senior in high school, I was bombarded with questions from teachers, faculty, family... ANYONE, and the question that was the most popular was "so, what is your major going to be in college?"
Clearly at barely eighteen I had no idea. Sure I had a clue of what subjects were my best and most enjoyable, but how are you supposed to know what you want to do with the rest of your life when the most complex class you've ever taken was algebra two?
All the adults in my life told me to go towards a career that would make money, something that would pay the bills. Yes, that's a great plus, but whats the point of going to college for four years, just to be in a job you hate for the next fifty?
Even in college I struggled to select a major I liked. I switched four different times by the end of my sophomore fall semester, then it hit me. I didn't have to choose a major that pleased anyone else, its my life and I have to live it.
I did NOT need to choose a major that made me a billionaire, and I didn't have to choose one that had security and a job for life. I realized that the only way I would figure it out, was to choose what made me happy, something that I enjoy learning about and something that I am extremely passionate about.
So, instead of picking a major that has a promising job with a 401k, pick a major that will inspire you to be the person you are, and be happy in life because work shouldn't always be work, it shouldn't be something you dread, you picked it, you might as well like it.
