The “Supergirl” finale left us wondering: “Who is in the pod?” One of the obvious guesses is the Boy of Steel himself. And our society is at a point where we need Superboy.
Superboy, also known as Kon-El and Conner Kent, made his first appearance during “The Return of Superman” arch, following “The Death of Superman.” Kon-El is the second hero to don the name Superboy. The first was Clark Kent back in his teenage years in Smallville before claiming his fame as the Man of Steel. Most versions of Superboy depict his purpose of creation to be to replace Superman if he died, and kill him if he goes rogue. Superboy was created to be a living weapon. He doesn’t have the same powers as Superman, but he is able to replicate Superman’s abilities with his tactile telekinesis. Superboy’s personality is similar to that of Peter Parker. He’s a rebellious wisecracking teen, who is still learning his place in the world.
After the climactic events in the season finale of “Supergirl,” a Kryptonian pod emerges, and once opening the pod, Supergirl becomes shocked by who she saw. The most obvious choice is most likely Krypto, Superman’s dog from his home planet. Other possibilities are: Zod, Zor-El (Kara’s father), Powergirl (Supergirl’s Earth 2 counterpart), Doomsday, Brainiac, Alura Zor-El (Kara’s mother), The Eradicator, Blue Superman, or maybe someone we haven’t seen yet. The second most likely possibility is the Boy of Steel.
With the popularity of superheroes in television and movies today, a live action Superboy is what we need. We have already had two live action shows about a young Clark Kent/Superboy. And Conner Kent did make a brief appearance on ”Smallville,” but hardcore Superboy fans were still left unsatisfied. Rumors of the return of “Young Justice” have been circulating, but fans deserve to see Conner Kent in live action. Superboy’s popularity in the nineties was due to the fact that he was easily relatable to the young comic book readers sharing similar traits to Superboy. He basically represented the kid every kid wanted to be. He has a great origin story. He is funny. He is relatable. And the character is always growing.
Bringing Kon-El onto “Supergirl” would be a smart move. They have already established Cadmus Labs, the ones responsible for Conner’s creation. Kara needs a sidekick. Currently Martian Manhunter is in that place, but Martian Manhunter may actually be the most powerful character in the DC Universe. Even Superman said that Martian Manhunter is the one being that he would be scared to fight. He may not be sidekick material. A rebellious teenage Kryptonian clone would be a great sidekick and protégé for Kara. Especially since they are portraying Kara as a twenty something woman instead of a teenage girl. Superboy would also bring ties and questions to Kara’s home world. And it gives us another connection to Superman, if we never actually get to see the Man of Steel himself, although rumors are circulating that he will be in the Season 2 premiere.
Since “Supergirl” has been moved to the CW with the most of the DC television universe (except for “Gotham,” “Powerless," “Preacher,” and a few that are in development), the possibility of a live action “Young Justice”/”Teen Titans” show would satisfy many fans. A possible “Young Justice” cast is available. Superboy could team up with Wally West (Kid Flash) and Thea Queen (Speedy) and recruit a team of teenage super heroes, other possible YJ members that are present in the CW: Jessie Quick, Red Arrow/Arsenal, Connor Hawke, Mal Duncan (Guardian), Firestorm/Jax, Bug-Eyed Bandit, Vixen, and hopefully more to come. The team could even be led by Green Arrow, Felicity Smoak, Martian Manhunter, and Red Tornado.
The DC Universe may be replacing Kon-El as Superboy in their “Rebirth” run, but it doesn’t mean that fans will forget about him. For those of us in the generation to remember Superboy’s first appearance, a part of our childhood was attached to it. He was a relatable character for anyone who was in the process of growing up. That’s why bringing him on to “Supergirl” would be a great idea. The new generation of teenagers who don’t like to read would be able to get the character that helped most of us make it through our awkward years.
