The internet has been in an uproar recently over the recent letter the University of Chicago sent out to its incoming freshmen. The letter said that the college will not be an intellectual “safe zone.” That the ideals of students will be challenged, and freedom of speech will be upheld.
Many people have had a negative backlash to this but is it really that outlandish to have your perspective on things challenged. We go to college to learn, and what can teach us more than having the ideas that we hold dear challenged. College is a time for us to grow. We are all adults here, the least we can do is talk about controversial subjects without it hurting anyone’s feelings.
Sugar coating the world is only going to hinder future generations, and leave them with a big surprise awaiting them in the real world. In a way this is similar to what nations such as China and North Korea do, sugar coating it’s a form of censorship, and our founding fathers fought too hard for us to just sit down and let this happen.
Freedom of speech and thought is one of the most amazing things offered in this country, so the University of Chicago is doing something right by upholding the very foundations of what makes us all American.
